GM SPS update
General Motors will be sunsetting SPS on the TIS website on Sunday September 26th, 2021, regardless of subscription held. The only option for module programming will be SPS2 in Techline Connect after this date. Between now and the 26th, any failures to communicate in SPS2 that work as expected in SPS should be reported to General Motors Support… with the following information:
Date & Time
Module Type(ECM/PCM/EBCM, etc..)
This is very important for the ongoing improvement of this service and while it may not fix the car you are working on right now; it may save you a lot of headaches in a week or a month.
David, I'm interested in buying a vin slot and trying to learn the new interface before I get a call for a flash. Should I do that now or wait? Also, do you know if the VIN's purchased in the last 2 years will still be available for use after the change? Not that it matters much; I have never ever used one more than once but I am wondering. Thanks!
Philip, Techline Connect is now available, so you can go ahead and start working with that now. To my knowledge, VINs already purchased on your account will still be accessible until the subscription for them runs out, regardless of the SPS version. Regards, Dave …
Both VINs purchased and subscriptions purchased but not used will transfer over.
I error out every time I go to clear codes after a successful program. Not a big deal since I use another scanner to reset oil life and trans adapts but does this fall into their reporting?
Had my first issue on friday.. 2015 Cadillac Escalade new trans from dealer, went to program, but when you select TCM, it only show an RPO of M5u.. that is the newer 10 speed I guess.. Spent an 1 ½ hours on hold, then got cut off.. They have an option for a call back.. after another hour, Sharon called me back, wonderful lady, it was the 2nd escalade with this problem she had had last week, I am…
Matt, If you do not have the same issue in SPS1, then definitely report it. GM is working very hard to catch anything that limits the functionality of the SPS2 application.
I tried to program 2017 Suburban TCM 9/10/21 and had to go through the new process, according to tech support the 7th was the last day original SPS was available. The new process is fairly straight forward for programing. You still access your available vin slots through the AC Delco TDS website. After you download/install Techline Connect, you will click add vin it will bring up icon to launch…
So can you still buy the sub per VIN for $40 and it will direct you to load SPS2? Haven't done one in a while but have an inquiry on for later this week. Using a good laptop with Cardaq 3. Or do you have to buy the big ball of wax for Techline? Thanks for the heads up - good info to know!
Is there a way to program used modules? Tried a used ECM today on a 2014 Silverado and it would give me no choice but to switch to the VIN in the used module….
Did you click on program or replace and program? I seem to remember that option being in there.
Tim, Isn't everything after 2013 Global A, which precludes the use of used modules except non-critical ones that have no VIN already in them? The PCM is critical. I don't think you can use it.
I was trying to program a NEW FROM DEALER transmission… It worked fine today… I think they might have updated the database server… This is one of those where you program ECM/TCM, if you try and program just the TCM, it will error out… Last friday I tried both ways, ECM/TCM and also TCM, it errored out both ways.. Today the ECM/TCM process worked fine.. and just to be clear, the VINs that are…
Almost positive I have done used modules on newer GM's. There are Global A platforms like the Cruze and Trax after 2013 that you never want to try a used module on.
This isn’t even a global a issue at this point with sps2. Doing a 20 year old gm product with same issue after connecting wants to use used pcm vin instead of inputted or I can chose to disconnect completely . Running around in dumb circle with new software whereas old was quick work of this issue Had to use other methods to get truck out of the door. Seems like sps2 is one step forward and one…
Manny, The two GM dealer techs I follow say it's a disaster all day every day.....and they aren't even trying anything used.
It is ridiculous. If you ask me things are just getting worse to finish cars in this era. I have fixed more cars in the past two months with NLA or back ordered parts then in any time in my life. Gm tis2web used to be easy to work with and make used magic happen when necessary . They slowly remove features that allow us do our job easy. First years ago removing off board programming. Now secure…
LOL @ “Ford is the standout but for how long?” ---- From everything I read on here, IDS is constantly broken…no? Five or 10 years ago, I felt left out that we almost never needed to do any programming out here, now I am SO GLAD.
I've actually had few issues with the IDS. Some of the info from Ford leaves something to be desired (no surprise, considering the ‘lean diagnostics’ everyone is issuing as SI these days), but overall it's the easiest tool to flash with…at least right now.
IDS has problems somewhat frequently, but they are almost always minor and very quickly corrected.
Not sure with the new System but with the old one I would just leave the ignition off(so it wouldn’t read the donor vin) and manually input the correct vin before programming. Not sure if that’s still an option on the new system.
With the old system, you could just go into SPS and change it, on the verification VIN screen, it didn't matter what the old VIN was. With SPS2 you can manually enter it and then connect…but, as soon as SPS2 tries to update the module, it bricks it.
The new system doesn't work that way. See David Baartman's reply below. This is my next attempt….
My research and experience in just the last few days, is the used (Vin already written) will not be programmable. I've already ‘bricked’ two with SPS2.
My understanding is that you cannot use a salvage unit, no matter what: that the salvage units have to be virginized before SPS2 will even attempt a flash. I've attempted to overwrite three units this week, and as soon as the SPS2 goes to ‘update’ the module, it bricks it. Calls to the Help desk are a joke, as they have no way of helping. They cannot even tell me whether a reman with no VIN…
Timothy, J1850 vehicles are not an issue with SPS2, we serviced over 100 last month. What issues did you have with them? You can still use a Tech2 with SPS2. On the first page of SPS2, click the “Manually Select Tool” button in the right hand pane where you choose Reprogram or Replace and Reprogram. A new window will populate that will allow you to select Tech2 Legacy Pass thru or Tech2 Remote.
Hogwash! No insult intended, but your knowledge is wrong. Apparently, you have magic that very few others have, you should probably patent it! No one else has been able to do what you state you can. As for the Tech 2 method, (something I've been doing for over 19 years, since I was at the dealer), it fails as well. SPS2 simply won't work with an old serial port PC/laptop. Won't talk to/load the…
Oh, an addendum is in order: If we report this to support, who pays for the literal HOURS we are going to spend online waiting for support to either answer the phone, or call us back? Because, Support does not answer. It was bad before, but basically you're talking to the ‘ether’. My feeling, is that a major multi-multi billion dollar corp. has just laid a huge egg with this unbelievably poor…
