Shaffer Shifter
Years ago, I worked at a shop that had a Shaffer Shifter, and I didn't use it often, but when I did, I loved it. A year ago, I got a used one off of Ebay, and I have only been able to use it once. I currently have a 48re that shows no governor pressure, and won't shift.
I have no adapter for the 48re, or the 47re, nor does my manual cover those. I also do not have the pulse generator, and I can't remember if that was required for these transmissions, or not.
Does anyone have a source for cables, or at least diagrams for making my own? Also, uploads of the manual would be very nice.
They no longer make anything for the Shafer Shifter. I have one and use every now and then. As for the unit you are working on it would be better to hang a gauge on the governor port and see what it has. Use scanner to monitor desired and actual and compare to the gauge. Most likely the governor pressure transducer has stuck or the sensor failed.
I have a new sensor, and solenoid to install, I am just wondering if the info is out there to build my own adapters, so next time, I can use it. This one I am working on has zero pressure indicated, and it never shifts, with finally zero codes, so I am going to try the sensor, and solenoid first. My assumption is that if it were a bad sensor, it would at least shift, so I am guessing that it's…
I have built a couple using the info that is in the user manual. It gives you the pin info for their connector and what they do from the shift box.
Does the 48re require the pulse generator, or was that a different transmission? I can't remember, because it's been too long.
Are talking about speed sensor then yes. It has an output shaft speed sensor on the tail housing. Not sure what year truck you are working on but have seen a bad o2 sensor bring the circuit down. Also has a fan clutch on a diesel short out and bring down the governor signal. They all share a ground.
The Shaffer Shifter that I used had an optional pulse generator, and I can't remember which transmissions needed that to test, I was just asking if the 48re was one of them.
mine has a control for a PWM pressure solenoid, if that is what you are referring to then yes the 48RE would need that for the governor pressure transducer
