Coats 1600 3D balancer

Dennis Owner/Technician Danielsville, Pennsylvania Posted   Latest

I bought this used about a month or so ago. Worked fine until today. Technician was balancing a tire and the machine just stopped. Everything went dead.

The fan seems to come on intermittently, and the light on the hood switch is on. No lasers on. No screen display.

Any known issue with these balancers? I cant find any wiring schematics online.

I thought that I would ask the question before I call a service tech.

Hello Dennis! I left the automotive trade for a year and a half to inspect, service, and install vehicle lifts, wheel aligners, tire changers, and wheel balancers. If you had thought to buy a used John Bean (JBC) balancer I likely have the service manual on my laptop as we were the local JBC dealer. That being said I have sent a message to a former coworker that is still doing that job to see if…

OK Dennis - an update: The guy I used to work with knows another guy that is his "Coats guy". He will check with his contact tomorrow and see if he can get me some information. Ward

A quick update: My buddy got to talk to his "Coats guy" today. He is waiting to hear back. While waiting have you pulled the cover(s) and taken a look inside? Might be as simple as wire shaking loose on a connector to a PCB. These machines deal with a lot of vibration, and some pretty large currents as the spindle shaft motors starts up and decelerates. There is also moisture issues every so…

It seems like it might just be the on/off switch. It worked yesterday. I would still like to get a schematic before taking the cover off to look closer.

No reply yet from my co worker's contact - hopefully will hear some thing next week. Just for shits and giggles by pass the switch and plug it in. If it works you're done until you get a new switch. Every thing points that way - not very often a failure on a board will come and go like that. Usually when solid state parts crap the bed, they don't "come and go" like that. When and iff I get…

Hello Dennis: Well - it's been a week and my former co worker's "Coates guy" has not gotten back to him. My spidey senses tell me I may not hear back from him on this. If I hear any thing I will let you know. Ward

Thanks. I will probably change the switch. It has been working lately.
