BMW ISTA Configuration Help Needed
Hello ISTA users, I am seeking to solve a set up problem with a new installation of ISTA.
I have read and re-read the installation guidelines and followed every step except for the one that's hanging me up apparently.
When I launch ISTA, I always receive the following error message: “The current hardware configuration is not supported”
I took a look at the logs in ProgramData/BMW/ISTA/Logs and found that it looks like the application thinks that my machine is running in a virtual mode, however this is NOT the case.
…:19:37.841 INFO [T] ISTA: [1] LicenseAOSManager.CheckForValidHardware() - Environment found: 756E…:19:37.841 INFO [T] ISTA: [1] LicenseAOSManager.CheckForValidHardware() - Features found: 906EA 6100800 FEFAF387 BFEBFBFF …:19:37.841 ERROR [T] ISTA: [1] LicenseAOSManager.CheckForValidHardware() - Looks like ISTA is running on a virtual machine. Sorry but I can´t allow that. …:19:37.841 ERROR [T] ISTA: [1] LicenseManager.VerifyLicense - failed with exception: BMW.Rheingold.CoreFramework.LicenseVerificationException Error --- The current hardware configuration is not supported.
Has anyone run into this before and if so what's the solution?
Thanks,
From what I can see, you've got a brand new computer as of 1/13. Is that why you need to install a new version of ISTA? If you were using an older computer previously, can you try and do the install there, and see if it will ‘play nice’?
Thanks Timothy, This laptop is about 6 mo old, I suspect that 1/13 date was the last windows update. This is the 1st time experience with ISTA for me. AFAIK, this machine meets all of the minimums. I suspect the VM identification is part (or all) of the problem. Fortunately, BMW support is pretty quick. I filed a support ticket and they have already provided a tool to collect more data and have…
Scott, I have had to, 1. Install Visual C++ redist for x86 (even though I'm running 64bit) 2. Creating a shortcut to ISTAGUI.exe that launches it as Administrator Once I gave up and just edited the Windows Registry. Eric
Hi Eric, Did you experience the same error with the log showing the VM issue? Thanks for your input.
Scott, Yes, the same issues and several more, some with the installation and some with the operation or startup of the program. After seeing the data on the laptop you are using I believe it may be a laptop hardware problem. Is the hard drive a full SSD or is it a Hybrid type? I have seen Hybrid drives cause issues. The setup of the Hybrid drive may use virtual software that is hidden from the…
Thanks Eric, I posted my resolution below. Thanks for your input. diag.net/msg/mlajod6no3…
Honestly this is why I went with an autel scanner. In BMW aftermarket programmers can do the same and better job for the client then manufactures tools. I thought the best solutions came from the manufacture. In the case for bmw. Just use an autel tool with programming capabilities. It can do all of the needed programming a for just about every module. I have the im608 & the autel ultra. It…
We have many aftermarket tool options already. I have a special project I'm working on and it requires the OE platform. Thanks for chiming in.
Thanks Jorge, I posted the resolution here: diag.net/msg/mlajod6no3…
I solve autel problems with ista. If you are programming f and g chassis you are playing with a bee hive. I recently solved a problem caused by an autel on a f10. They programmed frm with autel at another shop. When the transmission shifted to 3rd gear the wipers would knock up. I suggested a update using ISTA as a starting point. It solved the problem
Try running it as administrator, and your not running it in comparability mode are you? To be honest download the freeware tool set from bimmergeeks or mike'sbmwtoolseasy and learn to use them. I've had my j2534 box with purchased bmw software brick more than one car. With the tools I mentioned I was able to force code and program them back to life. You would need a k/dcan cable though. Or like…
Yes, I am running in admin mode. Thanks for chiming in.
Scott It has been about 2 years since i was involved in setting up ISTA. I had been playing around with installing it on various configurations. As I recall when you have the Hypervisor “component” installed Ista will not even work on the host. I hope that can be correctly deciphered…. Not only will Ista not work on a hyperv guest, neither will it work on the hypervisor host, need to uninstall…
Hi Maynard, Thanks for that perspective. I am able to successfully install the application, it just fails to start. I suspect now that the disk manager on this machine is causing the application to fail because of log showing this specific language: “Looks like ISTA is running on a virtual machine. Sorry but I can´t allow that.”
Hi Maynard, Your recollection of Hypervisor was spot on. BMW support advised me to make sure that was turned off under windows program features which it was. The ultimate fix was the 2nd instruction and that was to enter the machine BIOS and disable virtualization within the security section (VT-x Feature). After a reboot, all is well. I'll post a reply to my original post to inform others.
Awesome! very good. Glad its all working. It is pretty frustrating with some of that when everything “apparently installs” then cuts you and says the hardware isn't supported… gee thanks! LOL. Did you purchase the latest update for your tesla? the latest autopilot feature? We have not yet sprung for that but it would be fun to see how well it works.
Hi Maynard, Did you purchase the latest update for your tesla? the latest autopilot feature? We have not yet sprung for that but it would be fun to see how well it works. Yes I did, the new hardware supports enhanced visualizations but I'm not important enough to be on the beta, but I am following a guy on YT that posts update videos all the time. Interesting stuff.
Ahh thanks for this, I should update my boss about the latest update available for self-driving on his Model 3. He says there is an update available to him for about 10000 dollars Canadian. If he were to spring for that …. it would not provide the same experience as this guy in the video you posted? If i understand you correctly? This Beta version the guy is using is not published as a software…
The available update is for hardware 3.0. A replacement of the drive computer will support the public release of the FSD software shown in that demo. I replied in another thread about my experience with the upgrade here:
I believe your problem is not enough disk space on the c drive. Your laptop may have a hybrid drive that uses a sort of vm to make programs think it is one drive. You need an incredible amount of space on the c drive, and I think you are at the minimum. I just installed it a few weeks ago, and I had to install a new 2tb ssd to insure I had enough space. I am pretty sure 1tb was ok but I…
Thanks James, I believe that this may have something to do with this. However, I have 290GB of free space but it looks like there might be something related to the way the disk is partitioned. I have a support request into BMW and they have already responded with a request to run computer inspection tools. I've already delivered the results and have received receipt confirmation. Hopefully…
Scott how many drives do you have the hard drive? You need 250gb on one extension (c:\). I suspect that's your issue
250Gb?! Holy heck! Why does it need so much? I don't have ISTA, but, outside of Windows 10 Pro, which uses over 10Gbs in some versions, I've yet to see a program that uses that much. Does it have a bunch of data files as well as the program? That would explain it.
Thanks for chiming in Justin, I just replied above to James K that I have about 290GB available however there is a virtual disk manager in charge of that and this is what ISTA may not be happy with.
Thank you everyone for your input. BMW support advised me to make sure that Hyper-V was turned off under the Windows program features which it was. The ultimate fix was in their 2nd instruction which was to enter the machine BIOS and disable virtualization within the security section (VT-x Feature). For this machine I was only able to access that setting after disabling the Kernal DMA…
I am glad you fixed it. Thank you for sharing all of the info also. I have a poor memory, and I may need to refer back here some day.
thank you this helped me get ista working after I got a new lenovo thinkpad, was worried that the specs I got were incorrect. Only issue now is whenever I plug the ethernet cable in my wifi drops out and the session then cannot be verified against the session. I’m sure it’s a simple network setting I need to change but I can’t seem to work it out!
Recommend to Not use WIFI. You need PC and ICOM hard wired to Ethernet. (same network)
I had same hardware code. Followed instructions to disable virtualization, but now I get error ISTA failed to start. Any ideas?
I would suggest contacting ISTA support. They may have you install a tool to log the events leading up to this error to report back. It took about 24hrs for them to get back to me with the instructions needed to be successful.
