Key fob and key inventory
I have been programming and cutting keys, but I have a bit of a problem with key blank and fob inventory.
As of now I am not keeping inventory for fear of buying stuff that does not move. Just wondering what other key cutters/programmers do in order to be more responsive to request without buying a lot of inventory that does not move.
Hello David. I have a same problem here with me I have almost $5k worth of keys sitting my box and after the 2019 my sales dropped like $85%, I have 3 programmers and last time I programmed a key was about 3 month ago. I will say to just order the key when you need it instead of keeping it cause I think its a waste of money in my opinion.
IMO, U are Not advertising/making yourself Known to others that U make keys….if U have not sold a key in 3 months. Being a Locksmith can be extremely Lucrative. Transitioning from an an Automotive tech w 35yrs experience in diagnostics/driveability/electrical experience….doing Security/Immo work has led me down a path of Transitioning into a Full-time Automotive Locksmith. I WONT so much as…
Where have you found to be the best places to buy keys and fobs?
From a US supplier! Not saying i dont buy Some items off of Ebay/Amazon, but rarely….one must Know the Seller/Supplier….typically from Experience….good an bad. Usually though, from Locksmith Suppliers: IKS, AKS, UHS, MWK, CLK, HLFlake etc…but these Require Accounts….and often Proof of being a Locksmith…..Credentials, Key Code knowledge, Questions that must be answered etc…
I usually buy from my securitypro.com or keyblanksale or americankeysupply
Thnx for posting….i will consider those in the future!
I get mine almost exclusively from american key supply, because they are over by Vegas, and I am in AZ, so I get all my orders in 2 days.
Every key I sell I order 2. I mark up my keys double soo my mark up pays for my inventory. I try to keep a handful of and regular transponder keys for all the common makes I see. It's remote head keys and prox that are hard to stock. I have a fleet with over 100 gm and Ford vehicles soo I stock 5 of everything in their fleet
I usually carry at least 1 or 2 of the fobs that rarely move and then hoard things that I know move fast. Easiest thing to do on stuff you dont know well is just when ever you need to order something, order at least two so you have one for backup/future inventory.
I very rarely make keys so I just keep some xhorse super chips and a few of the most popular key empty shells and a few xhorse universal remotes. If anyone needs a key I don’t have I will usually order it as needed.
I'm in a more rural setting, and I got into keys, because nobody around could do the Honda HD101 keys. I have a yellow page listing for locksmithing, I have it on my business card, I have a banner on the side of the building, listing it as one of our services. We don't do very many, maybe 3 a month, but we have gotten some really good customers out of it. I stock every single non transponder…
FYI, No worries on the XH product…..Quality stuff!….the Range is Awesome!….altho may require 1 battery/yr….give and take. I made Custom Flip keys for my HHR and Transit Connect from Honda and Toyota Style Flip keys….wrote the software and added a chip….Absolutely Love them! I think there are like 11 configurations for Chrysler…..and if U include the newer Ram and Jeep, about another dozen…
