Pico Scope 8 Channel Pro Coins

Joel Diagnostician Soquel, California Posted   Latest   Edited

Good morning I am interesting in buying the pico scope of 8 channel, for sure the advantage over the 4 channels I have is the reaso 4 more channels . how ever reading the specification I found each channel has max peak voltage of 50 volts . I do not know if this will be disadvantage and get the scope damage if we forget to install attenuator , simple crank sensor ac can go over 50 volts peak to peak at higher RPM, I would like to know input from technician who has it what do you like about and what you do not like . I appreciate it .

Joel- Id say the cost of entry is probably the biggest reason why many opt for the Pico over ATS. Since the Pico is likely in more hands, you're likely to see more files from that scope. When I suggested the ATS,it wasnt me insinuating it is better than Pico,it just seemed to me it would better suit your needs and allay your fear(damaging your scope) It doent matter which type of scope file is…

Joel, The old PICO (bought mine 2007) was also limited to 50V max. It says that on the front of my box. However, for 10 years I never read the message, did not consistently use the attenuator, but did consistently exceed the 50V. I didn't do too much secondary ignition but did many solenoids that spiked to well past 50v. Never had an issue with the tool. The only failure was falling on Channel…

Joel I second what Rudy says and also what Jeff says. ATS will fit the issue you are concerned about.

They have voltage protection of 100v if you search the specs 50v is the readable direct input. Your crank senor would be safe I would make sure attenuator is used with injectors or ignition coils I think all else is usually fairly harmless. Or as the others recommend check into ATS.

Joel; Good afternoon Sir, I hope this message finds you doing well. I have both Pico's 4 Channel Lab Scope and their 8 Channel Lab Scope. I also have ATS's 4 Channel Lab Scope and their 8 Channel Lab Scope. For me the user abilities within Pico's software make this tool a better fit for most technicians. Nothing against the ATS equipment I have the Emisfire Scope and there is nothing like it in…

I just purchased a Pico 4823 from AES wave & couldn’t be happier. Scope software gives a bright red visible warning for any channel that is over voltage. I learned from John Thornton to setup scope channels, each for a defined purpose & leave them that way. I have installed attenuators on two channels and just left them in place. I’ve used Snap-on scopes for nearly 30 years (including…

Definitely look into ATS 8 Channel, I have Pico, snapon, and bosch 5200. I own four Ats scopes, 2 eight channel, and 2 four channel. They are very powerful, I work with the scopes along with my techs, we always grab the ATS as we think they are easy to use. It really depend on what you are use to grabbing and getting familiar with as far as we are concerned ATS is the best and most powerful easy…

Joel I own a PICO 4 channel and two EScopes...I teach Hybrid classes and for two main reasons I do not use the PICO scope in my Hybrid class. Reason one the leads cannot handle high voltage...they need to be CAT III 1000 volt certified and hace non metal ends. Reason 2 the scope has limitations such as the attenuator. The EScope with the CAT III leads always works and does a great job. It's very…

We have the Snap-On scope, the Pico scope, and the ATS scope. In my opinion the ATS is the easiest scope to use. If you are a flat rate technician the ATS is the go to scope. The ATS scope also has things that my other scope don’t, like inputs to fire an injector or coil, and outputs that can simulate signals or fire a coil driver. It also has the pressure transducer software that save time when…

Joel et al, At … we have Snap-On Verus, Pico 4 channel, and the ATS 4 channel Elite and the ATS 8 channel Pro. We started using scopes in the mid '80s. I can tell you that at our shop the scopes reached for consistently are the ATS 4 if it's simple and 8 if it will take a test drive. All techs are encouraged to grab whatever tooling suits them. Pico stays in the cabinet and the Verus is used…

Hi Jerry, sorry about deviating from the topic of the thread, but I have a safety-related question: even if CAT III leads are used, wouldn’t the chassis of the scope and the tablet/PC (and, thus, their USB, audio, and video ports) get energized if high voltage makes it to the scope’s ground lead? There is no mention in the specs that eScopes provide galvanic isolation for the inputs.

I can sort of answer that question by the fact it has been tested by ATS and that I have used it along with many students that have the EScopes. There has not been any cases of a EScope, Computer or lead having an issue. Hope that helps

Just curious, how much scope testing do you need to do on non-insulated high voltage wiring on hybrids? If absolutely necessary, Pico offers a differential probe that is CAT III and allows measurement of signals not referenced to ground. I am not by any means a hybrid specialist, so truly curious. The hybrid issues I have diagnosed were using three high current probes. Everything else I have…

Yeah, I have always used current. Easier and safer than voltage. A lot of times I just roll the car in the bay and look at the three phases current to see if they are even.

Just another thought on the Picoscope and hybrid vehicles... For the 2019 model year 62.5% of HEVs sold were Toyota/Lexus, they have always represented the most hybrid vehicles sold. Here is a link to their oscilloscope special tools. You are saying that the Picoscope is not safe for hybrid vehicles, yet it is the choice of the largest OEM producing hybrid vehicles. I am not arguing against…

I have the Pico 8-channel and love it. You can see it in use here. In my opinion it is the best bang for your buck, and the new Picoscope 7 software is going to be much more user friendly. I recommend the AES Wave test lead kit. The only testing that will require an attenuator is fuel injector voltage and primary ignition voltage. The 4823 is protected to 100 volts, so something like a CKP…

Here is a file I saved last week and some screen shots of it. You should be able to open it in your Picoscope Automotive software and play around with it. If it doesn't work, download the latest version from the picoauto.com site.

Hello Joel, Many are not aware that the ATS Scopes have an extensive library of know good CMP-CKP waveforms build into each scope that allow you to display a known good pattern in our Dual Scope display while comparing a live pattern on the same screen. ATS users also could add to that library themselves, from known good captures. I have attached an example of a known good waveform loaded in…
