Tcm Reprogram

Came to us for the usual Program from another shop. After waiting like half the morning for Tech Connect to do it's updates. I only do the odd GM and then had to get the Snap-on J box drivers installed in my lap top, We usually use a different one. SPS2 connects, identifies the Module and starts the update/reprogram. Then about half way through fails. Seems to have bricked the module, Shop had a second used one. Bricked that one too. Or at least I think I have. Is this truck new enough to only be able to program new? I had a list somewhere that told me but can't find it. Pretty sure this truck is not worth the time I have already invested so want to stop now and advise the other shop to stop too.

You can absolutely do a used module in these. This is nowhere near global a. Dis you isolate the module before programming it? Likely your pass thru is too fast and causing this issue. This is class 2, always isolate the module your programming on class 2. min some cases, I’ve had use modules on non-global A bit take a theft learn. but programming would go through fine. I feel your pain Brian. That has been an all too often occurrence since the introduction/rollout of TechConnect. Under the older/legacy system (SPS 1.0), apparently, the rate of data transfer on it, was ‘slow’. The new system is built for later, rather than earlier vehicles. It's far more complex, I'm sure, but that's what I've been able to ascertain on a reading of all the available info, plus…

Is it the correct module for the vehicle. Lately with SPS2 I would get error codes but with SPS1 it would go part way and brick the module. Seems like they did a big update today on SPS2. Just got done doing a used PCM in a 02 express. It didn’t like the replace and program, errored out. Had to select reprogram!

Yeah, I just about gave up on anything older than CAN vehicles with SPS2. I just use the old legacy Tis system, and it's worked fine. For a while there, I was going on a SWAG, and hoping. Tis fixed that.

SPS2 will no longer reliably program pre-2009 vehicles and will almost always fail to program used modules.

I can't say I am an expert but have worked with the older SPS a fair bit. Didn't think it was Global but wasn't sure. Unfortunately never had a Tech 2 so will do some more research to see if I can do this one or any older ones. As I said this truck is just about done so not sure how much I want to invest. The shop that brought it to me got it from the Dealer after they gave up on it. He hasn't…

Not sure if this helps, but I ran into an old Saturn that was not listed on the new SPS2. I called Acdelco TDS tech line and they were able to allow access to the old TIS2 WEB system for me, for 24hrs to program an ECM for that vehicle. Maybe this is something that could be done so you can use the old system as well.

Just closing this off. Truck has not returned so I have not had the chance to try to brick another module or to even check status of the Class two data lines-- on to the next one
