Looking for mid 80’s suburban harness
I’m looking for the fuse box under the dash and the connector Under the hood that bolts to it. If anyone either has one or knows of a good resource I’d really appreciate it. I can do a pick and pull if it’s in Northern California.
thanks,
matt
There's someone on Ebay selling 3 under dash harnesses with the fuse panel. If you contact the seller, they might have the under hood connector for that as well. ebay.com/itm…
Those are available new from restoration sources like speedway motors, painless wiring and American wire.
Dare I ask what the problem is with the harness and fuse box you have? Has it got failed fuse retainer pins? I have run into this before. Getting a used replacement seldom works for very long. I have a source possibly, but will need to check.
Melted contacts where they bolt together 💀💀💀
Hi Matt, I have a friend who retired from GM and he has rebuilt many of these vintage Suburban's and trucks. Have you disconnected the halves and located the burnt wires connectors? He mentioned that the old black contact grease used in these was messy and hard to distinguish actual burn issues. He currently has a 90' parts Suburban, but wants to be sure what you are chasing first, this may…
Hey Glenn, I was initially thrown off by the black grease but once I started trying To source parts I noticed that they all look like that. This one had a previous wiring “repair” that has resulted in a short and melted a wire from the fuse box to a junction on the firewall. This is not a restoration, rather I’m just trying to get it back on the road and out of our parking lot. If you could…
Hi Matt, If it is just a couple of wires, I usually drill out the damaged cavity area clear of the other wires, then pass necessary patch splice wires through, solder and shrink tape as needed. Finish up with sealant to prevent water intrusion and it should be good to go.
Great advice Glenn but I’d rather replace the box and connector in this case
Hi Matt, How long do you need the wires on both halves to be? I am not sure he is willing to hack the harness halves, but I will ask. I have no idea how much he will ask.
Just long enough to be able to solder, say 3” min. thanks Glenn
Hi Matt, Sorry, he is not willing to hack the harness. I will check around with a couple of other guys I know. This may turn into a Pick and Pull trip for you.
Hi Matt, I texted him and he can go $200.00 plus shipping. He will have to remove the harnesses out of the 90' parts Suburban. Let me know.
Is that for the under hood and under dash harnesses? I need the fusebox (under dash) and the connector (under hood)
Hi Matt, It is both engine bay and interior harnesses complete as possible. I will look it over myself and make sure before removal. You may have to splice rear light to body harness, or whatever is easiest for you.
This all sounds great Glenn. Go ahead and have your friend start pulling the harness please, do you have any idea how long it might take? I can give you my email address so that we can work out payment and shipping. Thanks again
I will call him, it should not take very long. Contact me via email. …
Hi Matt, We plan on pulling it this Wednesday and I will update you. Your email came across okay. He said the only difference you should see is this harness is made for an electronic speedometer and yours has a cable. The extra un needed harness wires can be clipped off and taped when you install.
Hi Matt, Harness portions were shipped this morning via USPS.
Forgot to resolve this. Glenn saved the day!
