Classes

Food for thought....

I see many many classes advertised on this site and other web based resources that I would love to attend. These classes are in places such as Sacramento, Denver, Miami, Boston, Wilmington, Alexandria, the list goes on and on. A very wide range of locations. Many times over, it is not the cost of the class that is the issue. The issue is the distance away that the class is held. Now, I understand that some classes are "hands on" or equipment at the location may be needed to be in direct use of or in reach of the student. However, I would encourage instructors, companies and sponsors to set up web based video, so that we can attend live and or purchase the training a few days later. I specifically have been intrigued by training that is posted and immediately scroll to the location and realize the distance is an issue. The annual ASTE, Super Saturday, Vision, events such as Automechanika, yes it is understood that travel, hotel and time away from work is necessary. On the flip side, the week to week opportunities that are missed could be remedied by adding online options to the numerous classes throughout the states! Furthermore, with our ever changing business and the vast variety of vehicles coming through our bays, at times I simply cannot wait until the next annual training for the education to conduct repairs. These are simply my thoughts to make the knowledge accessible to the ones that care!!!!!

Samuel, I have to admit, I'm a little confused with your post. Between Jerry "G" and the rest of the TST group there is a TON of Great training videos available, also Jerry "G" and Pete Meier from Motor Age have been doing a series of webcast on diagnostic procedures, along with some like "Trained by Techs" on You Tube. Also, as far as traveling for Training classes, you are so close to the…

Yes Sir! I am signed up for SS...I am going to NC for the training in Sept. I attended the "Big Event". Jim, if you breeze through again, I am specifically speaking about those who cannot attend classes. Those classes going on around the states that we are NOT physically able to attend and would want available by live video.....Mike's response was real time and Pj's post was spot on regarding…

Sorry for the misunderstanding of your post, Samuel. I do understand what you are referring to, there have been times for me that the class fee was very reasonable, but as you stated, the travel, hotel and meals made it tough or impossible. As the lead tech and shop owner in my own shops, I just started to look at it different, the same as a piece of diagnostic equipment, I looked at Training as…

I do agree with you, Sam. I also agree with Jim. I'm from Pittsburgh and as far as local training goes. There is essentially none. CTI, Worldpac, ATG. None of those companies put on training events within a 90 minute drive from me. I'd be traveling 4+ hours to go to a "local" class. Now, I'm close enough to Super Saturday to call that event "local" so I wouldn't miss it for the world. But I…

At my shop, all we get is NAPA classes and once a year or two an ATG class. All the NAPA classes are is just some dude reading us a powerpoint at 8pm after we've worked 8-10 hours and then fought traffic to get to the class. Give me web based classes any time!

I would love to do more “in class” training myself, but unfortunately all we have here are the napa/federated classes, which is ok to a degree but I’d like to go to more of the classes I see advertised here. Are there ever any in Syracuse NY? thats the closest “big” city to me, about 90 minutes.

I'm literally opposite ends of NJ from you by High Point. The closest training is ATG in Scranton-1.25 hours away followed by TST in Mahopac NY, almost 2 hours away. Nearly all the classes I have attended from Worldpac were in Gaithersburg Maryland some 4 hours away with perhaps 2 exceptions, 1 in the Allentown PA area and 1 in Seacaucus. Unfortunately, since I am a 2 man operation, training…

I live in anchorage Alaska. And unfortunate money is tight cause I put it towards starting a business plus tooling up. Add to the fact I'm a signal father and it gets hard to drop a couple thousand for a weekend or even a whole week. Not saying that is everyone's situation, but for me lately online training or live events are a huge life saver for me cause the classes in my area have been very…

Scranton is way closer than either Woodbridge or New Brunswick.

True but the class that you want may not be available in Scranton. Not every class is held in every location. It's an option if you need it. Guido

I took this class a few years ago with one of my technicians. It's well worth the money and very intensive. For anyone needing it it's a must in my opinion.
