2012 Mini Cooper S Multiple Cylinder Misfire
2012 MINI C/S idle rough/limp mode.
Can't get the Mini to idle long enough to attempt scope data on coils. Coils have yellow marking paint on them implying possible factory coils. 98040 Miles Customer doesn't recall having coils done.
Fuel rail on High Pressure side @ idle (when it would) shows 8.5MPa to 11MPa with peaks at 15MPa (Ignition on engine off; at which point I turned off the test.) Supposedly pressure at idle should be 3.5-5 MPa. Can anyone confirm?
Is the FPR in the tank?

this may not help I work a lot on this mini all years. I notice the fuse box on the right front under dash by pick panel will get water soak do to the sunroof leaking I would pull it unplug it make sure the terminal are blue water damage this minis are know to leaks water from sun roof to that fuse box good luck
Also check the footwall module they get water at Connector
Check for coking of the intake valves caused by crankcase vapors. Need to install a catch can in pcv system to prevent reoccurrence. Remove intake manifold and using a mirror look into head and you will see the port is obstructed. Clean port with valve closed for each cylinder. Thats an Interesting conundrum for sure. all the info I can find says fuel pressure needs to be at least 4.8-5mpa to start, but more importantly I believe is if the actual is close to the setpoint/desired. I dont believe Ive ever heard of a pump that was bad because of to much pressure. Pressure sensors do go bad, and wiring problems for the sensors occasionally heard of.. Any good story on…
Wondering about coils. Appear stock w/98k on them. Can't get the car to idle to scope them unfortunately. Not throwing coils at misfires is a life goal of mine :p. Car should have 50 bar to start cold ( 5MPa) if you are seeing 15Mpa, that would be the highest output the High pressure fuel pump could achieve. Either a incorrectly reading rail sensor or a faulty HPFP. All the HPFP I've had fail on MINIs will not build pressure past 1MPa on a cold start. I would be looking at the rail pressure sensor and wiring
Thanks. I was commanding the rail to prime but I was assuming the FPR would kick on at some point. I stopped the test at 15MPa for safety concerns. Customer recently had fuel rail replaced. No codes for pressure sensor however.
I agree getting a better description from the customer is necessary. Those cars have high pressure pump issues. There was an extended warranty on those pumps. The first symptom is hard start/lousy running cold that sometimes clears as the engine warms up. A call to a dealer with the VIN will get info about replacement and current status. SOLVED. Bad Battery Cell + Bad Battery Charger (My charger failed) New Battery + new charger. Cranked for about 5 minutes until I got it to turn over and hold idle. Went into misfire detection and checked the counters. Cyl 3 misfire counter high. Scoped the coil. Intermittent 10-20v wave fluctuations. COIL FAILURE.
