MDI2 Connectivity

John Owner Medford, New York Posted   Latest

Has anyone been experiencing the following issues.

Ever since the last MDI update which I believe was May of this year my MDI2 will not connect to GDS2 or SPS right away. I go into MDI Manager and it recognizes the interface and I can retrieve information, S/N, etc and it shows MDI and laptop are at latest update. I try restarting program , interface, etc all to no avail. Performing a recover procedure on my MDI2 gets it going every time and then I will have connectivity with GDS2 and SPS. Until the next time I need it and will have to perform a recover procedure again. Prior to the last update I had none of these issues and went from my original MDI to MDI2 seamlessly.

I have no issues with my original MDI. Never have these connectivity issues with it. I am running Win7 PRO 64 bit. The correct java, etc. I put a call into the Delco helpline this morning and have yet to hear back.

Any feedback most appreciated.

Hi Sir, you can try to disabling your internet on your laptop. Why...I dont remember. This wont fix that issue. This will allow you to use sps and gds2 again. There should be a message disable the internet on the laptop when trying to access the tools.

Huh? I can use SPS and GDS2 that isn't the issue. What does disabling the internet do? How are you going to use SPS with no internet?

I know it does not make sense. Try it. It is the mdi 2 interface that has a problem working with the internet or wifi.

For me, it works works great in the facility(gm proving grounds). When I am out of network, mdi 2 wont work. You have to disable the wifi or internet switch on your laptop for mdi 2 can talk to the software (gds 2 or sps). I worked for me and my colleagues.

I am using MDI2 with USB not wireless. I am not cycling internet when I recover the MDI2 and then it is operational.

Hi John: Even though you are using a USB connection, the MDI2 uses the NIC. Depending on what is installed, you can have a conflict. Don't ask how I know this. Grrrrrrrrr. If you don't get anywhere with Delco, you can try calling our office .We offer paid T/S for products that we didn't sell. HTH, Guido

Anthony, Thank you for the response. What is maddening is I have not added anything to this laptop. Nothing has changed when it worked properly to now. More than one person has reached out to me privately and have said they had the same issue and a fresh install on a different laptop solved their issues. Lets see what Delco says. Thank you for the offer I might take you up on it.

In the new SPS update you have to select the interface you need to connect to, have you tried that? If it does not work out, you may have to update the MDI Manager software and then try, See the version you have with the one that appears in SPS ... It may just be that 🤷🏻‍

As stated in my original post MDI Manager says MDI and software are at latest. I am familiar with selecting proper interface. Thanks for the input.

Hey John, I recently went through the same thing with my MDI2 to wireless and found out that I can remove the USB from my laptop and when I plug it back in, I go directly and click on my Wi-Fi signal down on the bottom ,once I plug the unit into the car it takes about 10 seconds and then in my Wi-Fi box and it lists MDI. I clicked on the MDI Wi-Fi and everything connects up and works perfectly…

Jeff, The issue that I have is when I am using USB wired. I believe what you are experiencing is an issue using the MDI2 wirelessly correct?

Hi John, Am I correct that when GDS2 is opened you're not seeing the MDI in the Device Explorer box that opens up? And performing the recovery procedure on the MDI2 it then appears? Do you use the Wi-Fi as well as the USB? I think Guido is on to something as I've experienced issues switching between the two and this primarily happens when I start with Wi-Fi and then switch to USB. Or, if I go…

The other thing would be if you are planning to upgrade your laptop and you buy one with Win10 home you can upgrade to Win10 Pro with a Win7 Pro product key. Or if your current laptop meets current GM specs there are ways of still updating Win7 to Win10 for free. I wasn't sure what your plans are so I thought I'd add this.

Scott, Yeah the Win10 is a consideration and a new GM Win10 machine is in the works. I have spoke to several people since posting this and many have said they had issues until going to W10. It is quite annoying for sure. Great thoughts and I will keep everyone posted on what happens. Stay busy and well Scott.

To all, Just an update for everyone. Never received a callback from Delco. Many reached out to me privately with similar issues and possible solutions. I decided to uninstall and reinstall MDI Manager and we have no more issues. Same update level, etc. Go figure. I have had similar issues with Honda iHDS where Download Manager had to be uninstalled and reinstalled to load properly. I have…
