Where do we turn?

Blind Spot Calibration

Last week we were called out to perform a BSM calibration and post scan on a 2019 Mazda 3 (VIN: JM1BPACM1K1101392). Upon scanning the vehicle with the latest release of Mazda IDS and Mazda VCM2 we found that only the PCM and TCM would communicate. Next, we went through the basics and determined it is likely a tool issue. We tried an aftermarket tool which also had communications with the same modules, but we were unsure if that was due to tool or the vehicle. We then got another current Mazda IDS/VCM2 setup on the car with the same results. After rolling back to the previous release and again having the same results we began to do more research.

It turns out that the 2019 Mazda 3 is not supported by Mazda IDS. Mazda has a new cloud system at their dealers called MDARS. We contacted Mazda about this gap in availability and it was confirmed that it is not available to the aftermarket at this time. When asked for an ETA their response was "at least a couple of months away".

Here is where my question comes into play. Given that we use OE tools on every car we work on we were forced to pass on this job and work towards a solution going forward. I went to file an SIR on the NASTF site and upon completion, received the following error:

Approximately a month ago we received the same error and forwarded the screen shot to NASTF. Ultimately we got our issue resolved and regrettably didn't follow up to see if the NASTF SIR portal has been fixed. The portal appears to be having the same issues it was earlier this month.

The NASTF SIR portal was also down for many months previously as can be seen in the screen shot below.

I will end this by posing my question again. Where do we turn? What do we do when an OE decides not to make tools/software available and the processes in place to govern them are broken?

Contact the EPA, tell them you need to make repairs that won’t be covered under warranty because you are doing collision repairs. File an official complaint. Find a shop in R2R states and have them file a lawsuit. If its available to dealer it should be available to the aftermarket. Especially anything inhibiting emissions repairs. Its really unacceptable, in my opinion, that if they are…

Kevin and David, Kevin, I feel your pain. The NASTF SDRM email link was having issues for weeks (I also sent them screenshots of the error to them) and I lost out on a job because of that. Ultimately, I lost the customer as well. Totally agree with you David the time has come for us to put some pressure on the OE's. Unfortunately, not many are willing to go to bat for us. I have been saying…

I agree, too much pandering. NASTF has a lot of issues, they aren’t a reliable asset for this anymore. It’s hard for me to swallow and say this but the EPA & NHTSA need to step in and regulate this. They have allowed Tesla to create a service issue and thus let the other OEMs follow suit. Consumers lose when they have no choice but the dealer.

It's a constant fight. I hate, and I mean hate passing up a job. Good looking out, I was completely unaware of this. Good to know, thanks for sharing.

Have you tried MDSFA (Mazda Diagnostic Software For Aftermarket) ? This has had coverage for 2018 and up model years and may have the functions you need. It is available from MazdaServiceInfo.com and is the R2R software for 2018 and newer Mazda's. I have used it on 2018 Mazda 3's with full functionality of IDS, but have not had a 2019 yet.

Per Mazda this vehicle is not covered by that software package. It will require only MDARS which is not available.
