Steering wheel controls for audio system inop. when cold outside
Hi Fellow techs,
The customer complaint was that the steering wheel controls do not work at times. Of course they worked ok when the car came in. I drove it home last night and this morning it was about 20 deg. outside, and they didn't work. The controls for the cruise work as they are supposed to. I let it sit outside after coming in to work today, but by the time I was able to take a look at it, they were working. I assume the problem is temperature related. Two questions: 1. What module do I go into to see PID data and do bidirectional controls for these switches, if there are any?
2. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and what did you find to be the cause? Bad switch or a bad clockspring?
Thanks, and Merry Christmas.
Maybe there is moisture between contacts freezing or cold enough that. contraction is taking place enough to create a gap between contacts. No way of really confirming except removing steering wheel and place it in freezer and start testing resistance of circuits once cold enough while vehicle sits outside. At least you may isolate it that way as once wheel warms up, reconnect with vehicle being…
I would take a heat gun on low, warm the buttons up and see if things start working again. That would really narrow down the location of the problem. I bet there's an issue with the membrane behind the button
I understand that this message was downvoted because I didn’t include any tests. My purpose of posting this was so I couldn’t find out what module to get into so I could see PID data to aid in my testing. I‘m not sure what I’ve done wrong with this post. Could someone clue me in?
Lots of members get downvoted. Don't take it too hard. I understood your post and what it was about. Most of the responses looked legit to me. Lots of failures are affected by the weather. My own personal vehicle behaves differently when it's very cold…
When IDK what module handles a driver/user function, I look at the wiring diagrams to see where the switch signals "go".
I wish I could say this issue is resolved. Covid has kind of delayed things. First the customer got it, Then I got it. As a result, I have not been able to get the vehicle back to do any further diagnosis. I'll update everyone once I see the vehicle again. Thanks for the help.
