BMW X5 New Key Lock / Unlock Works From FOB, No Proximity Features Working
New key came from BMW. Learned to vehicle. Locks and Unlocks doors. Key has to be in slot to start. Door handle unlock not working. Original key working fine. Any ideas? Any suggestions of where the training went wrong?
it sounds like this vehicle is equipped with comfort entry and there fore it will need to be programmed by dealer or independent repair shop with access to ISTA
…, Snap-on, iScan, Auto Ingenuity, Autel and ISTA can perform the function of Enabling/Disabling keys.
Did you use ISTA or Autel to learn the new key? If key has to be in slot to start, it's not learned by the CAS module or you got a non-CAS key from BMW. Is it a late E70 or an actual F15 X5M? I'm going to guess if it has a key slot, it's still an E70 with the thin keys. CAS keys have a replaceable battery, non-CAS keys are not replaceable and are charged by the key slot.
I used autohex to add key. It shows up in CAS as active key. Prox features only ones not working.
Michael, The Comfort Access (CA) feature only allows for 2 keys to be used/assigned for the feature associated with CA. You will have to use an enhanced scan tool to go into the CAS (Car Access System) and perform the Enable/Disable Key service function. Disable a key # earlier than your new key ( Key #1 or 2 is a good bet). If you have all of the keys you can determine which key is missing and…
Thanks Eric, 5 slots are used in CAS. I bet that you are right. Customer had to leave town. Will see them around thanksgiving. Will try again then. Very good information to have on BMW Comfort Access quirks.
If you had all five slots used, how would it be starting the car. BMW keys purchased from the dealer do not have to be programmed. The proximity key learn procedure has to be performed. No tools required. It happened to me, no one had the answer not the dealer or my tech support line they said it should just work. My customer lost their key and had it towed in so I didn't have anything to check…
Vehicles with convenience entry must be programmed to work properly. They will start but will not function for convenience entry until programed... I would say to use ISTA Michael but not be surprised if you have another way around you are more clever than most when it comes to programming.
Try this. Make sure that this key is facing with the tip of the proximity remote toward the spot on the steering column where it shows key with two arrow marks. *Hold proxy key to the steering column between the marks. *Press and Hold brake pedal. *Press and Hold push start button. If dash shows "crossed key" - keep applying brake with your foot, holding the key against that same spot and at…
Hi Nicholas, Thank you for the information. I found this online as well. There are no key markings on the column side but I tried setting the key in the area described. When the customer gets back in town we retry your prescribed method. -Mike
Try holding it up against the front antenna
Nicholas, Thanks for the lead. Will do.
Michael I have said it before....you see the MOST INTERESTING vehicles with the most unique problems!
You have to use ISTA and assign the key a personality #1 or #2. Personality # is different thank key number. Key number is determined by BMW security when they issue the key to match your vin and CAS. Personality # can be assigned using Ista. For example you can have lost the 2 master keys (1 and 2) You order a pair of replacement keys which might be key 3 and key 4 in the CAS. You can assign…
Jose, Thank you for the detailed info. When the customer comes back to town I will have plenty to try.
After reading Jose's post I found this on BMW TIS: Activating of a new remote key Insert the new remote key in the insertion slot and hold in this position until the remote key locks into place. This can take up to ten seconds. After locking, wait another five seconds. The remote key is then ready for use. If the remote key is a replacement for a lost or defective remote key, the old remote…
The Key has been activated. It starts the car. The Comfort Access is related to locking and unlocking without using the remote buttons. Passive Go is also associated with remotes that are assigned one of the two available Comfort Access slots. I described the exact path to correct this.
I learned something new today, Thank you.
The Personal Profile # has nothing to do with Comfort Access. There are 4 Personal Profiles that are assigned to the 4 potentially active keys. That Personal Profile Tells the CAS which key relevant memory functions to transmit to the Body modules. The results in the Seat memory, mirror memory, Climate settings and radio station memory being pulled up for that key/Personal Profile.
I understand, just showing that the key does not need to be programmed with eeprom programmer to enter it into the CAS. I understood what you wrote. Thanks, Nick
