CA DCA - Recruitment of Subject Matter Experts (SME's)
Hello everyone,
I received a request from the State of California, Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair to post this notice for anyone interested:
BAR is reaching out to the instructor community looking for qualified Inspector and Repair Technicians to serve as Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) for exam development workshops.
SME’s are paid $240 per day for their services and are reimbursed for travel expenses. In order to participate on this panel, they cannot be a Certified Instructor (due to DCA policy OPES 11-01) nor a State Employee. BAR looks for the following qualities for SME’s:
- SMEs who participate should reflect the profession in terms of specialty area, geographical location, ethnicity, and gender.
- SMEs chosen to participate should have up-to-date skills. Roughly half of the SMEs should have received their license within the past five years to ensure the entry-level perspective is maintained.
- SME participants must be currently licensed and in good standing.
If you would like to participate or know anyone who would fit the criteria or would be interested in becoming an SME, please use the following contact info:
Janelle.Calindas@dca.ca.gov or by phone …
You can also send referrals by submitting their name/contact information and Janelle will reach out to them to provide information and have them apply.
Thank you.

When you say they are looking for qualified Inspector and Repair technicians, do you mean licensed smog techs? Those titles(Inspector and Repair tech) seem to indicate so.
Hi Rudy, Yes, according to the list, this is who they're seeking: - SMEs who participate should reflect the profession in terms of specialty area, geographical location, ethnicity, and gender. - SMEs chosen to participate should have up-to-date skills. Roughly half of the SMEs should have received their license within the past five years to ensure the entry-level perspective is maintained…
