Message status, tagging, and edit notifications (Version 2.5)
This latest release of Diagnostic Network (2.5) is designed primarily to make it easier for people asking questions (either as "Question" or "Bounty" message types) to keep everyone appraised as to the status, as well as to give everyone a feedback loop to help people post high quality messages.
Specifically, members posting questions will be able to reply to their original message with an update, resolution, or even an explanation of any hold-up in resolving their issue, which we call a "delay."
The current status of the question will be reflected on the message type tag, as shown here.
Going forward we will notify authors that haven't resolved their questions within 2 weeks, but in order to avoid an avalanche of these kinds of notifications, this will be something we only start doing now.
We would encourage anyone that has previously asked a question on DN to view your questions, and either post a resolution now if one wasn't posted previously, or upvote and tag any worthy replies as the "Resolution," and the status will be changed accordingly. If you already posted a reply that explains the resolution or delay, you can just edit that reply, and you'll see the new option for authors to indicate what kind of reply they're posting.
Read on if you're interested in more details about the new features.
You can now tag a message when you vote on it or bookmark it. Tags provide context for your votes (i.e. why you're voting the way you are), and for your bookmarks. We'll show tags on a message if either (a) you were the one that tagged it that way, or (b) two or more members applied the same tag, or (c) you're the author of the message being tagged.
If a message gets downvoted and tagged within its first four hours of existence, we'll send a notification to the author, giving them the vote and tag details. This provides an easy way for everyone to help improve messages. If a question is posted that lacks key information, you can reply to it and let the author know, or just downvote the question and in the tag box, choose the appropriate tag, such as "Missing DTC," "Missing Info," "Missing Tests", "Missing Vehicle", etc.
If an author then edits their message to improve it, they now have the option to notify participants. If they do that, anyone that has participated in the discussion, bookmarked it, or tagged/voted on the message, will get a notification with any notes from the author, as well as a reminder of the vote and tags you may have applied.
Question Updates, Delays and Resolutions
Authors replying to their own messages of type Question or Bounty now have the option to set their reply as either an Update, Delay, or Resolution. Authors can also tag any reply, even if written by someone else, as the Resolution when they upvote it.
We also now send a reminder to authors that haven't resolved their questions within 14 days. Over time, we would expect there to be a negative effect for those that don't resolve their questions, or provide a "delay" reply explaining what the delay is in resolving the question.
Message Edit Notifications
Sometimes message edits are just minor tweaks, and no notification to others is warranted. But for the other times when you're making an important change to your message, you now have the option to notify the other participants in the discussion. You can also summarize the changes you made, and we'll show that summary when we send out the notification.
This feature will become even more important as voting/tagging become more important, as it will give participants a chance to reconsider their votes/tags. For example, if someone posts a message that gets downvoted and tagged Missing Info, and the author resolves the problems, we would expect voters/taggers to adjust their votes and tags when they see the edit notification come through.
Don't worry if you make a series of rapid edits... as long as each one happens within 5 minutes of the previous edit, we'll group them all together and send out a single notification.
- When an author starts a reply to their own message, if it's within 6 hours of the original message being posted, we'll show a warning encouraging them to simply edit their original message rather than replying to it.
- Fixed a bug related to data files being misinterpreted as document files when uploaded from Google Drive
- Fixed some VIN decoding issues
- Message notifications now show the same icons for topics, user groups, vehicles, DTCs and symptoms that we do on the website itself
- Globe icon shown on public user groups now reflects the viewer's geography (one of: Americas, Europe, Asia, or Africa)
- Added two new sections to our Help page: Asking for Help and Tags.
Our previous release notes are here, if you're interested.
We hope you enjoy this release, and for those in the U.S., let me wish you an early Happy Thanksgiving.
