Changes to Honda/Acura SRS Deployment

Just a note to anyone working with the Collision Industry that Honda made some (significant) changes to the reporting structure after an SRS deployment event. If you are unaware of this change, you could be caught unpleasant cross-fire between the shop, the insurance company and the OEM.

See the attached TSBs from Honda & Acura on affected models and years for specifics. Bottom line is on these platforms the SRS module no longer reports DTCs after a deployment, but rather records specific data PID states. These are resident in the old SRS and will need to be reviewed after a collision! You cannot clear the light with the scan tool, the SRS module needs to be replaced to make the light go away. 

The issue is confusing because the service information shows deployment DTCs, but these are for the old system and not relevant to the new design.

Thanks Bob, By MY 2017 this transition was complete No deployment DTC's on Honda.

Close visual inspection after an accident with one of these is very important as well as following service information for required repairs and component replacement after a deployment.

Even the data pids are still a bit ambiguous on what was deployed.

Very interesting, thanks Bob. Now if I could just figure out how there can be only two body shops on this side of the island and they NEVER need any SRS diag from me. One, I even talk to daily...he's in the same building!

I too have been seeing this as the norm lately. 

I do not find it to be a bad thing that manufacturers want all related components replaced after a deployment. I would much rather a new component be in the vehicle than on that has endured a collision, the shear force that electronic components endure during a collision event is traumatic to solder and unsecured component level items on the boards.

This is the reason for so many post collision procedures and inspections after a collision event, even those that no deployment occurs, that are required by manufacturers. Half of the post collision calls I respond to involve me reminding/reading factory service procedures to the shop.
