Programming
2006 Nissan Frontier SE 4.0L (VQ40DE) 5-spd (RE5R05A)

I was having a challenge programming a blank 5-Speed TCM because of incorrect instructions from Nissan and wanted to let others know an issue with the documentation that is included with the software.

A local transmission shop asked me to program a 2006 Frontier because they had replaced the valve body with a brand new dealer purchased part. After correctly identifying the correct software part number for the transmission (because Nissan-Techinfo gave me two options) using an online Nissan Parts catalogue, I downloaded the .zip file and read the “Reprog_readme.pdf" that was included with the software. I followed the instructions as highlighted in the attachments and attempted to program the transmission. After a 70 min software push to the TCM, NERS failed to configure the transmission and reported that it couldn't find the configuration files. I double and triple checked the folder path that theReprog_readme.pdf instructed and verified that I placed the correct files into the correct folders per the document.

At this point, I was about to recommend that they send the truck to the dealer because it appears that the Nissan Consult III+ had more capabilities, but I also remember seeing that there were instructions for the Consult III+ in the same read me file. I observed that the configuration folder was different:

Consult III+ Folder path per the instructions: 4.2) put the AT_*****.csv and AT_*****.enc files in the C:\CONSULTIII_plus\System\Application\External\Authoring\ECUSpecific\Configuration\107\ folder

J2534 Folder path per the instructions: 7.2) put the configuration data, AT_*****.csv and AT_*****.enc files in the correct folder explained below: • For Windows 7 64 bit OS_C:\ Program Files (x86)\Nissan J2534 ECU Reprogramming Software\Nissan\DTool\PDX Package\ExternalFiles\Config\ folder

There is a folder labeled “107” in the “Config” folder so I placed the files there and was able to successfully configure the transmission.

You realize you are violating the cardinal rules by reading the instructions don't you? As a technician, you are supposed to know everything about everything automotive, just ask any customer and they will tell you. You should be ashamed of yourself. Now that the stupid rant is over…. Thanks for the info and glad you got this one done. You saved another one from being subjected to the ‘all…

That’s weird. I never had to program a TCM on a 2006 Frontier 5spd. The only TCM reprogramming was done on CVT transmissions. Now in 2015 the TCM started coming blank and you have to program to vehicle for CAN communication. Do you know why they changed the valve body? … were prone to radiator cracking and dumping coolant into the transmission thus wiping out the transmission. I…

Hey Jeff! Thanks for the question. I did not ask for the reason for the replacement. I did verify that it was a brand new valve body from the factory. I did drive the vehicle a very short distance to the location I programmed the vehicle and it did not shift out of 1st gear. The ”O/D Off” light was on and could not be turned off which I read was a tell-tale indication that the transmission…

Crazy! I was with Nissan for 19 years and had never ran into that! I’ll be honest only had to replace a few valve bodies on these applications over the years again it was mostly the whole transmission due to contamination. But even with the trans replacements I didn’t have to program the TCM. sorry it was such a pain in the ass for you!

Jeff, Just to give you some reference originally these valve bodies were plug and play and pre programmed. Then Nissan/Infiniti went to blank TCM/valve bodies. These had to be programmed as the OP found out. To confuse the issue even more I have encountered some Infiniti applications that are plug and play as of the present day. Remember, these are 5 speed RWD/AWD units. I typically look them…
