2008 335i xdrive no start / no comm. with DME

Michael Owner/Technician Montreal, Quebec Posted   Latest

Hi I have a 2008 BMW 335i xdrive with a no start. Battery was dead, we charged it up and now I get a crank / no start. Scanned it and there's no comm. with DME. I have power on Terminal 30 & ground but with key on I have no power at both terminal 87 pins. My next step is to check at my DME relay to see if its the relay itself or if im missing something to it but I cant seem to get a location for the DME relay. (alldata says its in the fuse box behind the glove box but I only have my term. 30 relay and my wiper relay. there is a relay right next to the PCM but I'd like to know if anyone can confirm exactly where it is so I can continue testing.

Thanks

My info conflicts. Wiring diagram says behind dash like Alldata but then states RR of engine compartment elsewhere.

yea mine as well but actually looking at my DME I only have a 50 A fuse and 1 relay (cooling fans I think) in that area.

you either have dead dme or your scanner is not communicating properly. try another scanner. if no communication. then the dme is dead. most likely you have MSD80, Post the label of the dme.

I'm using a snap on and I just scanned an X5 so im pretty sure its not the scanner. I would think more the DME its just I cant seem to find good diagrams or locations to do the testing id like to do...

Trying a different scanner is a good idea. Snap on can get weird on euros. Yesterday on a 528 my snap on wouldn’t communicate and the customers cheap pocket scanner would. Let me tell you how I felt lol

if you have a decent laptop and j-box, you can install ISTA D/P for $30 per day for near factory level scan capability (you won’t have access to the fiber optic network without the factory interface).

yea that's the issue I was having I don't have power to my 2 terminal 87 pins but its the pcm that energises that relay so that's why id like to find that relay and see if my issue is on the control side or if its just not sending.... I found a supper cheap DME that I can send back if not needed so I'm just going to plug it in to see if I can at least communicate & if so get it programmed…

Verify that it doesn't have a jb4 tuner installed. Can definitely cuase com. Issues, remove DME cover and inspect. Jb4 will be piggy backed on DME. You can also check power at the DME at that point also can you communicate with the abs model it's on the same can network?

Pretty sure there is an integrated relay module at the base of the right side firewall, that provides ignition power to DME. A factory wiring diagram may be required to decipher it.

Hey if you are still working on this, give me the last 7 of your VIN and I can look in ISTA diagrams. Really fantastic diagrams where you can click the relay and it will give you a picture, location and other info.

I just guessed at all the specifics for the model not having a VIN, and two locations showed up for K6300 (DME relay): First location shown is the relay is an integral part of the JBE fuse box behind the glove box. Second location shows the relay next to the 5-fuse block in the E-box. Not sure which it is supposed to be...

Hey thanks for that! I was going to update today... after reading all the comments about the amount of guys tuning these I called the client just to be sure if he had a tune in it or not and that's when the truth came out.... car was running bad and set a bunch of cam and throttle codes and he figured he could just plug his tablet in that came with the tuning software & re-flash it but…

We had one like that. Customer hooked up a CeTec battery maintainer and car went too low. Cost my guy about a grand! It is amazing how people think it is going to be fine to flash a performance tune from their phone or tablet! Ha Ha Ha! We could not get ISTA to move forward with a test plan as it wanted several modules to be replaced before programming. We removed DME, CAS, and EWS if I…
