P0017 — Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor B

Posting this again, hoping to get it resolved. I've fired the parts canon, but still the same problem. I need some help.

Here is the original post: diag.net/msg/m5fu5vneyq…

Here is more information about the vehicle. I posted on IATN as well, hoping to get it resolved.

Customer bought car from auction with no engine/trans. They bought another salvaged car and installed engine/trans from that. the replacement engine was pulled from VIN: KMHHU6KJ0DU088865.

After replacement of engine, P0017 bank 1 exhaust/crankshaft correlation problem. The customer had his mechanic "fix" the timing, but did not install new chain. When I get it, I noticed timing is good but went ahead and installed new chain, guide and tensioners. Verified timing 3 times. Same p0017 code.

Remove timing again, changed vvt solenoid for exhaust camshaft and went ahead changed the cam phaser and camshaft. At this point, I just wanted to get the car out of here and pulled out the parts cannon. Same p0017 code.

I noticed that the production date is 12/11 on the body and 9/12 on the replacement engine. After verifying with the dealer, all parts interchange except for the vvt solenoid. Replaced a vvt solenoid from a 2012. Same p0017 code.

I'm sick of this car and need to get out of the shop ASAP. What am I missing here? I've changed everything on this car besides, the PCM.

There is a TSB for updated chains and crankshaft sprockets make sure you followed it, also check oil control valve a stuck open valve will advance the cvvt only while running because of oil pressure

How about the reluctor on the camshaft on bank 1 compare to bank 2? How about circuit integrity for the oil control valve for bank 1 ex compared to bank 2 ex? Since you tried everything, if you have incylinder transducer maybe you can compare both banks whats going on the exhaust side. I search both vin they are both from 2013

What Marko said. Is the reluctor on the opposite end of the cam? Check it against the Bank 2 exhaust cam reluctor position to see if it's moved on the cam.

OK so is there still a way to compare it too Bank 2 exhaust cam when the timing marks are lined up??. Your scope captures clearly show it actually is out of time so just thinking that might be the best place to start. Have the cams been compared to the original cam that were in the original engine??

Bank 2 ex cam is perfect compared to waveform provided by hyundai.

Yes I understand that. Could you answer my question about the position of the reluctor on the cam?? Is it on the opposite end of the cam or same end as the sprocket? I am trying to say can you put the car in time and then physically check the position of the reluctors versus the cam lobes?? May have to pull the valve covers. What would be even better is if you could maybe borrow an in cylinder…

I think to my knowledge that the 2013 model was the first to switch to GDI, so the 2012 non-GDI components won't work even if it bolts right up. There has been countless amount of changes to the VVT's back when while working at Hyundai, so if you feel confident the dealer gave you the right one, you should be good to go there. Did you change the crank sprockets with the new chains…

I gave the dealer VIN for the body, which decodes to 2013. Production date says 12/11 on car the engine was installed in. The donor vehicle has a production date of 9/12. This is the confusing part, I got parts according to the VIN, not production date.

Tayab- I dont want to send you down a rabbit hole, but just to verify that you have the correct engine installed,I would look at the PCM software…..

I have a couple of suggestions. Using a scan tool, are you able to see where the computer believes what degrees the cams are? I would scope the B1 intake cam to crankshaft to see if it is the same or different as the exhaust. I know you dont have a code for the intake but this will give you direction. If it is off also, then i would be looking at the crankshaft gear. The bulletin says the new…
