Scan tool advice

Joshua Technician South Carolina Posted   Latest

Looking for advice on good obd2 scan tool for recording data on test drive to analyze back at shop. Would prefer laptop based but not set on it. I have an autel and launch for more vehicle specific just not impressed with data storage or presentation for test drive sake. Leaning towards Escan but haven’t heard much about these aspects. Thank y’all in advance.

Watch the youtube videos by Bernie Thompson on his Escan, you'll gain a lot more insight into its features. Great tool.

I agree with Escan, it is laptop capable and also Autel Ultra. Lower grade Autel do okay but lack storage capacity.

My personal preference is Snapon I have modi’s and verus also have the escan and it only reads obdII pids so if you are planing on review enhanced OE data like air bag or abs you will not see it with the escan. Autel sucks for details recording I have tried it and stopped using it . the thing I love the most about Snapon is their PC software is free to download and you can load older files as…

One of the most accurate OBD scan tools is the Silver ScanTool. It is used by Government agencies because of its ability to retrieve all the available data. There is a learning curve, but I believe it's worth it. Let me know if you are interested.

Here are some captures of data. The excel is stitched together to better analyze data during different times during the test drive. I use Pid 41 to determine if I am in the conditions for the monitor to run. The PDF file is a scan from a vehicle. You can use this as either a pre or post scan. It is nicely laid out and offers all the data pids available for the OBD2 system There are a few of…

When you say OBD2 scan tool, are you referring to a generic OBD2 tool? Escan does have some really nice features you are looking for by analyzing generic OBD2 data. I'll second Fernando's reply. Escan won't get you any OE specific data - just generic OBD2 data. I have a Snap On Solus Edge and Autel 909 - each have their place. If I want to record, save, and analyze data, Snap On is by far the…

For what it is worth, AutoEnginuity is PC-based and very capable. I've talked to more than 1 larger company that did specific testing on coverage and both said that AE came out miles ahead. I'm more an HD guy, but we've sold thousands of AE hardware/licenses over the years and rarely receive a coverage complaint. autoenginuity.com

Our problem with Auto Enginuity is that the license is tied to the hardware not the software. If a tech misplaces the hardware you need to buy a full price licence again. After that happened with us, we stopped using AE instead of buying another licence.

Joshua, if you want obd laptop scan tool , hands down its the E Scan it is Bluetooth to laptop I own one it has a lot of other features like time to temp, but it is very technical with the voice prompts , what I mean is if the fuel trims let’s say zero plus or minus ten degrees and it just hits eleven percent the voice prompts will tell u fuel system problem , so u have to get used of it , but…

Raymond, What do you do with your escan if you have an ABS problem, and HVAC problem, a power window problem, a communications problem, etc.? Why would I pay $1800 for a tool that is generic OBD2? I don't get it. I have the old one that was $250. It was definitely worth it for my smog work. I liked and still like its ability to graph fuel trim and VE. But to pay that price and be limited to…

Phil I must have read into Joshua question too much, I only saw the obd2 portion so I thought he was looking for generic, to answer ur question about abs and other problems I get my verus edge autel ultra ,elite, and pro out along with several OEM scan tools, I bought that only generic scan tool that Bluetooths to my laptop because I got a real good deal on it . So it is useful by graphing things…

ATS Escan has good tech support too. Ive called in multiple times and Jeff has always been very helpful. A few time I’ve had a vehicle problem and Pierre walked me through some diagnostics. ATS Escan is very powerful once you learn how to use it.
