2011 Ford Focus - Starts, then dies immediately. Everything seems normal otherwise ... advice appreciated. Make/Model: Ford/Focus Engine: 1.6 L Fuel: Diesel Year: 2011 BHP: 115 Engine Code: T1DB VIN: WF0KXXGCBKBC34982

Could be something simple this one folks, but for whatever reason I just need some thoughts and opinions.

I was on this vehicle yesterday. It's a family members and I'd previously serviced it. It brought up a code for an injector and the idle values sat at around 0.9-1.0 for 3 cylinders, but 1.2-1.3 for No.2. It also had a horrendous tick to it and sometimes sounded like it was struggling. Before I went any further I asked it to come back so I could just monitor some live data and drop a relative compression on it just to be sure of the blocks health.

All seemed ok. Injector code had gone, but still the same values on idle. It seemed to struggle sometimes. I took it for a run. Try and clear it out. It only ever does 2-4 miles. Doesn't go anything further per run. DPF closed loop around 40%, open loop around 90%.

On the way back it started to struggle. Got back and it started to regen, but had to end it as too many people about. I then rescanned, all generally ok, but it has a common code for comms with ABS unit and rear wiper relay. Not sure it's related, but worth mentioning.

Vehicle got taken away and got a call this morning saying it wont start.

When I got it, it was now at a point where it would fire up, run for a second, then die. Every time. I've spent a couple hours over 2 sessions on it, no codes, bar the random ABS one and the rear wiper relay. Tried everything, checked everything but I cant get it to stay running.

Rescanned and the injector values seemed to of all reset to 0, which is an odd one. Not the 7 it should show for adjusting injector levels. Obviously these can be rectified once giving it a run, using the sync method, but I cant get that far.

I also get "Auto Start / Stop - Manual Start Required". I feel like it might be something Start / Stop related.

Relatives have also just mentioned it said something different this morning, thinking it was "Auto Start / Stop - Reset Required".

Like I say, seems to run well for that second, then dies off.

Only other thing was maybe the relative compression has introduced a bit of air into the system and may just need a prime, but it didn't cross my mind at that point.

Any thoughts appreciated as I'd like to get to the bottom of this one.

Thanks.

Have you checked live data for fuel rail pressure?

Hmm … No EGR faults and I've tried pulling the feed, Will see about accessing the body itself. Tucked right down the back somewhere I beleive.

Lives look ok for the brief second it runs. Otherwise not enough to go off. I cant remember the exact figures and didn't record them, but it peaks, then shuts down and drops.

I've had this issue on VW from time to time. I don't know if you have immobilizer in the UK. Here in the US the fix for VW is either to replace the PCM or have the immobilizer tuned out. Good luck.

Yeah, full immobilizer system. Central locking all function fine. Fobs work fine. I'll see if there's a second key. Wonder if it's a key fault.

Luke Update

Update: Spent a good few hours covering lots of suggestions and re-going over the basics. Final result at the moment is still at the same position. Fires, runs for a second, then cuts. Everything seems to be reading fine, the only thing that's become questionable ... On crank, the rail pressure hits 500+bar / 60000kPa (once spiked at 1080bar / 108000kPa) ... I expected lower figures. Is this…

As a figure of exemple on Bmw the diesel high-pressure pump is capable of generating pressures up to 2000 bar, the air Qty seems ok too, on this model of focus injector tend to fail, you should test them directly via an injector machine, also an electrical problem or bad wires linked to the the Rail can provocate worse symptom try to unplug the rail sensor and then start the car. Good luck !
