Ford F-Series PCM: Where to buy and programming question

Tom Technician Texas Posted   Latest

Hello all, we have diagnosed a 2007 Ford Truck F-Series 4.2L with a defective control module. A quick search on google show a vendor selling a programmed module for $500+. It is cost prohibitive for my customer.

I just wanted to know the following:

1.)Where do you all source these from and if an unprogrammed module would be cheaper (ie. if I can buy it refurb/remanufactured)

2.)If I can get a cheaper unit, would you recommend I program it myself or use a remote/virtual programming service and would it cost less.

Thank you in advance.

Below is the notes from the website that is selling this unit:

"This Engine Computer also referred to as an Engine Control Module (ECM), Engine Control Unit (ECU) & Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is a guaranteed replacement for all 2007 Ford Truck F-Series PCM models with a 4.2L engine size and matching part number 7L3A-12A650-FMB. This module belongs to the hardware code MN2-L37W1.

Our 2007 Ford Truck F-Series ECM will arrive Programmed, Flashed & Updated to your vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) with the most recent manufacturer updates."

Remember you have to program two keys on top of the refurbisher's programming. But if you have the capability, you can even buy a used ECM and program it.

Have you tried finding a used one from junk yard? I'd rather install a used pcm than a reman " plug and play"

As everyone has said. Buy used, make sure numbers are exact, PMI since you didn’t state if old communicates, erase all keys(you will need 2) if parameter reset isn’t available, done. You can also use ForScan to read original PCM as built data, if available, then paste it to new. But not sure since a 2006 Explorer didn’t have the option and ForScan said it’s not possible to read as built and save…

Not for nothing, but “cost prohibitive” shouldn't be your concern. That $500 module sounds like a steal if it works and is truly plug and play. I dont know what your time is worth, but youll likely end up losing more than $500 in time and effort to find a used one that works good and is hassle free...

I am the furthest thing from an expert but I can tell you i purchased a ecm from one of these companies that advertised their module as plug and play. (2014 E250) All I had to do was program the keys. The first one came with a code for a corrupted vin After a two week wait. That was returned after another 3 weeks it was sent back to me with the same code. after 4 days of trying to get someone to…

The big question is are you willing to write off your time when it isn't programmed right. I haven't bought a reman myself, but have programmed many for other shops that was told it was a plug and play. And not sure why, but it seems that i have to fool with it or do AS-BUILT and some you still have to program keys if pats is stored in the PCM. I recommend OE or Used and do it yourself.

Do you have programming equipment available? I can't tell from your post. If you do, your most economical approach for this specific set of customer requirements would be to purchase a used one in the $75-100 range (example: LKQ in Toledo is $90, 6 month warranty). Program it to your vin, then enter PATS, there is no parameter reset for this vehicle so you can simply "program additional key" and…

We have had terrible luck with a certain company out of New York with reman computers, If at all possible get a used unit and do a pmi with ids or fmp, if the original unit will communicate leave it in during the first part of the programmable module installation and it will transfer the proper as built data. If a parameter reset is possible you will not need to program keys, if it is not…

As most of the posters have said, the ‘Plug and Play’ modules are very hit-or-miss, as to whether they truly are. I make a bunch of money as a mobile programmer, ‘repairing’ these units, as they are almost never plug and play, by programming them for shops. Salvage is almost always better, and calling in a mobile guy to do the programming if you don't have the capability, is the least expensive…
