e46 BMW 325i EWS replaced
Ok guys, I need your help one more time, got called to attempt programming of a new EWS module, customer tells me the original one was defective due to intermittent no start. drive vehicle into shop and just plug New EWS module, hooked my MK908P and go to program and coding, find only coding options for new ews, nothing else. proceeded with coding- successful, proceeded to EWS-DME sync- gives me error saying that “voltage supply faulty or DME unit faulty, check battery and voltage supply first”, at this point I do not know if it means lack of power to DME or EWS, checked voltages for both- all ok. Be advised that vehicle was running just before installation of new EWS, fault was very intermittent. I do not know if the failure decided to act up at the moment of coding and sync but I doubt it. Re-install the original EWS, now does not crank, data says starter not enabled due to key not recognized, Now re-installed new EWS, key is recognized and valid, vehicle cranks but no pulses. only code at this point is 002737 from DME saying anti-tampering protection, I'm assuming is not authorized due to lack of alignment. the question for you guys is: is more than coding necessary for this particular EWS?, perhaps ISN transfer? any extra steps missing?
I think this is still EWS III. I think you need to complete the DME/EWS alignment procedure successfully to solve the no start. If you have a different scant tool available I would start there. If you have a J2534 device a short term sub for ISTA would probably work well, as you do not need to program anything just perform the alignment. Keep in mind most would advise to you not to use a J2534…
”New” from a BMW Dealer? or “New/used” 3rd party parts supplier? New EWS replacement from a BMW dealer will come with all the key data already programmed into the EWS. If any NON FACTORY BMW KEYS are programmed to the original EWS, these non factory BMW Keys will not be programmed into the new EWS. New EWS modules from a BMW dealer Will only come with key data programmed that BMW knows of…
Did you have a stable external voltage source connected to vehicle during coding? All programming/coding requires it to maintain at least 13 volts.
Ignition switch is very common failure on these. Usually confuse tech bad ews module. Look at the wiring diagram . If I remember 2 of the pin should have power with key on'at the ews. . Bad Ignition switch thorw low voltage codes too. My cents. Thank you good luck
What James says. I would add that if the EWS is new from the dealer and the customer does not have a second key then consider telling customer to get a new key from the dealer and try again. I would also add that if the EWS is from the dealer the car will start without coding the EWS. It just needs alignment of DME and EWS which is a simple procedure in the service functions of the autel tool…
Do you have im508 or 608 isn has to be changed depending on which variant of module you have may not be able to be done via obd. May have to do on bench in circuit. Can you post a picture of module or part number
The EWS only needs to be coded and aligned. However if the key is faulty the EWS will not code. Also If the ignition switch or the antenna ring start to fault you can get a no crank no start. Sometimes the oil level sensor can short and cause a no start and there bulletins on this concern.
Hi, do you have the AK90+ tool and EWS editor to verify the ‘new’ EWS data?
See SIB 61 30 06 There is a pin that needs be swapped when going to EWS 4.3 If an EWS 3 (HW03) control unit is replaced with an EWS 4 (4.3) control unit (part numbers: … or …, change the terminal 50 input on the EWS control unit connector (X1659) from pin 3 to pin 2. Refer to Repair Instructions 61 35 910 (Removing and installing/replacing control unit of electronic…
On this case this bulletin did not apply, I checked the pins and pin 3 was already in position 2
Ok guys I was finally able to solve this. It turns out neither the im608 or mk908, both autel products were able to perform the sync. I was able to do it with an old launch x431 I had laying on the shop gathering dust , which by the way I was thinking of selling but now I know is a keeper. On this occasion autel let me down which is not something that happens a lot but now I know better. thanks…
