Snapon pass-through assistant

Roddy Technician Ontario Posted   Latest   Edited

My shop just got the new snapon pass-through assistant tool. I was wondering if anyone on here has experience with it. We've pretty much steered clear of programming/reflash all this time and sent most programming/reflash stuff out. So I've got questions about how do I know when or what to program 🤔 for example my personal vehicle currently has an issue with the ABS module (2005 pontiac grand prix gxp) the module appears to not be seeing the ignition voltage input despite it being there. Would this be a situation that programming/reflash can rectify? Or is it module replacement that is required? The one car I did successfully program/reflash with our older tool had a problem with the throttle not responding after engine replacement (2006 pontiac g6). The reflash fixed it and it still runs good 2 years later. Was that just a fluke? Any general advice on understanding this programming stuff would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the input guys. I tried to respond to each post individually but it looks like some ended up in others response somehow. But I definitely took the time to read all the posts and appreciate the advice from everyone.

I have it & use it quite often. The cons are the expense, scheduling sometimes might be a day or to out & you have to be ready for when they call in. The pros….you don't have to babysit!!! It is possible that reprogramming your ABS Module will fix the issue you are having. The only time I do any flashes, is when there is a TSB or other information that tells me the fix is a reprogram…

Thanks for the input. When I get the tool all ready to go, my ABS module will be the guinea pig.lol

Hi Roddy, software updates are usually issued to correct a software error or to address a condition not addressed in the initial release. These normally occur within 12 to 30 months of delivery. On a vehicle that has functioned fine for 17 years, it would be hard to believe software will fix it. One thing I would suggest is that you visit the Drewtech.com site and view the…

Thanks for the link on drewtech. With the g6. We had tried everything under the sun in regards to getting the throttle to respond used snapon scanner options, battery disconnect, tapping, wiggling…ect. Eventually I called Dom from cars on demand and after scoping it we decided that the contol gate in the computer wasn't going. So we decided to try a reflash to see what happens since it was an…

Odds are it doesn't need a programming event to fix an older vehicle all of the sudden. I'd also echo what Boyd mentioned below – Check out Drew Tech. They are the industry standard when it comes to programming. Snap On makes good equipment, but are usually way over priced compared to alternatives.

two parts to this interesting discussion, diag and Snap-On. In my experience some GM modules will take to a flash and some need to be replaced. I have replaced more abs modules and flashed than just flashed. The abs module should have a large red power wire, and a large black ground wire. I have seen these wires corrode at the module plug and replaced modules because of it. There is a site where…

Anthony- Agreed and you surely did hurt some feelings, but youre speaking your truth as you experienced it(and Im sure many others have as well) and I can respect that. Anyone with serious programing experience can easily see the truth in what youre saying….

Truth is the best way. There's so much misleading information in this business already. We use snapon alot, but hey, after 20 years I've come to understand that there's always room for improvement.

Thanks Anthony, Interesting to know. I did try explaining to the snapon rep about the vin flash for 2 years thing, but he seemed to think I was confused. I know that the snapon system is more pricey, but we have a shop of 20 bays and nobody with the experience in reflash….to make matters worse it's a flat rate system. But if it gets us in the door and in the game for now it will be good, then we…

Unfortunately you will find that you will need to use this tool more and more. Sounds good until you realize for not much more investment, if any more that what you have tied up in it now, you could do the programming yourself for much less of a cost per programming event. Learning to do it yourself and owning the equipment increasing the profit per programming event vastly. I provide soup to…

Thanks for the advice. I'll try and see if the boss wants to spring for some training courses. He usually does, so I'll give him a sales pitch on it.lol

It's $25 a month for access to all the content, sell it to him as a single month idea, cancel after the month if you don't think it has value for your shop.
