DOD/AFM Disable with reprogram?
So I got a call from a shop yesterday asking if it was possible to disable the DOD/AFM system via SPS. Of course I asked why and they said they had 2 collapsed lifters. They also told me they were able to get them to release. But wanted to see if I was able to reprogram the ECM to disable the system. I told them that I would look into it, as I have never done a delete or disable on these systems. I just only ever fixed them back to factory. So the question is can this be done via SPS or do I need to have and aftermarket programming software to disable the system?
You would have to source an aftermarket programmer. Gm would not supply software that would alter the original emission profile of the vehicle
There is a plug in made by range technologies that seems to work a fair price.
Not sure how 2011 works but on the newer models you can disable active fuel management by shifting gear selector to manual 5th.
Thank you all. I thought their wasn't a way for me to do with SPS but I figured I ask in case I was wrong.
Yes it can be done. but ask yourself do I want the consequences. You see HP tuners offers software to do so. That requires a purchase of a HP tuner module and 2 tokes to perform the task. That satisfies the PCM and MIL but not the consequences you see you now will be flowing to much oil volume through the oiling system of the LS engine this will then cause the engine to begin or increase oil…
Yes it clearly a violation of the EPA so ask your self do you live in a sanctuary state, county, city protecting you from federal laws (HaaaaaHa) its for off road use only.
How does telling the computer to not activate the DOD/AFM increase oil volume?
Hi Phillip, from what I've read and experienced researching this topic to build a training class, aftermarket programming is the only way and it is technically the same (in the EPA's view) as removing a cat. I toured the Jasper engine rebuild plant a couple of months ago. A very knowledgeable tech in their research center had ALL the AFM parts (I mean all generations too) laid out for analysis…
Refer them to the owners manual and have them look for the language that talks about the Clean Air Act. Fines could be levied again a anyone violating this act and I believe the dollar amounts are listed as well. Unless the OEM has a certified modification one should steer clear of doing anything that would modify the operation of any emission control systems.
I hear what you are saying and agree. But we don't have emissions anymore here and the customer is already gong to disable the system. This is his personal rig so I was seeing if their was anything I could do. Unfortunately for him I'm not going to spend 400.00 on a setup to delete/disable the system on the software side. And like I said I have never delete these system, I have only ever…
I have to wonder PZ, if you intentionally set a circuit fault....would that effectively disable it?
I tried that on my wife's 09 avalanche as I heard horror stories about oil consumption issues due to oil being pulled past the rings while deactivated then when activated burns the oil and cokes up the rings. Read about mileage not being affected and some reporting increase after deleting afm via AM program. I tried on mine by removing power to the solenoids, but,,,, evidently the pcm…
You‘re referring to emission compliance inspection. If you do what Geoff is asking below you can probably achieve your goal. If enough vehicles do the same, it might bring a soft orange glow to the hillsides which might be kinda cool during wintertime up there
Isn't PG&E routinely providing a "soft orange glow" already? ;-)
"Lack of maintenance" - ? Sounds just like every car I ever see here! Merry Christmas Scott.
I use HP Tuners to do them. Once the word gets out, you will be flooded with that work lol. On some model years the right way would be not only disabling the DOD, but also all codes that the system uses for faults, and a engine delete kit as well. Would recommend it only on customers you have a understanding with or like we do {cash only} for aftermarket work like that. Good luck
HP Tuner very simple to do. I have done dozens and also converted to a non dod where cam was damaged.
The 3.9 V6 with AFM does have the option, the factory parts are discontinued. GM offers a kit, with a VCI flash number.... Jasper has a CARB number in the works for a engine they are building to meet the EPA spec and delete the AFM.... I don't see it happening.
Jasper does have a 5.4L Ford Triton motor that deletes the VVT Solenoids. It has a C.A.R.B. Approval.
I decided to pass on doing this one.
