2008 Dodge Ram 5500 6.7L (A) 6-spd (AS68RC)
P0633 - Immobilizer Key Not Programmed - ECM/PCM
No Crank / No Start

VIN # 3D6WD76A28G119029

This is my first time posting so please let me know if I'm going to be missing any information needed. Original customer complaint: customer stated started to have a hard start/slow start and eventually went to a no crank condition. Had sat for several months and towed to local Dodge dealership. Dealership told him it had multiple codes and security codes and they would have to start putting modules in it and then it might need diagnostics after that, and no guaranteed fix with just a module or 2. Towed back to his place and sat for nearly a year. When I got to it, verified no crank condition. Security light on. Checked battery condition, powers and grounds, to standard items. Pulled codes with Autel Maxisys. PCM code of p0633 Sentery key immobilizer module (SKIM) secret key not stored in PCM, and WCM code of B1A25 (Invalid key).

Customer gave me both sets of keys and both are standard steel keys, no transponder. (tested to verify no transponder in key heads). Customer has had this vehicle since new and those are the only 2 keys he's ever had. I checked voltage from Ignition key to WCM module, did a WCM module reset and relearn of vin. WCM receives signal for start signal from ignition switch. Next verified TIMP received start signal message from WCM, Verified in PCM sees start from key through PIDS. WCM PIDS show everything OK. TIMP shows start signal received but sends no crank signal to start. Verified with Voltmeter, Picoscope and power probe. Nothing happens on the start signal wire to starter.

Erased all codes, only code that came back was the P0633. I was really confused as this vehicle shows no security system but I assume it still uses the WCM to transmit start information to the PCM and TIPM.

Ordered and installed a new TIPM from Dodge and relearned it, Vin recorded correctly. Checked build data in TIPM and everything shows correct. No security enabled, Correct vehicle, etc...Still no crank. Went back through and verified all module operation and correct VIN information. relearned PCM, WCM, TIMP, TCM, and no change. No voltage coming from TIPM to starter solenoid. TIPM still shows start signal being received. I checked and verified correct fuses and fuse placement in new TIPM, Tested voltage at fuses where applicable.

As a hail mary I checked and got a SKIM code for the vehicle from the VIN number (which I was really surprised as this vehicle has never had security), went into the WCM and programmed a a key with the SKIM code, which was accepted. Then upon final screen it stated incorrect VIN. Verified proper VIN again in all modules, The security light comes on and proves out, and I feel like the security codes are all bogus as this vehicle has ran its ENTIRE life with steel keys, but I'm at a loss on my next step.

Applying voltage to the starter solenoid wire from the TIPM does crank the starter.

Sorry for the long story but I try to be very thorough in my diagnostics and thought all information I could provide would be helpful. Does anyone please have any ideas or a direction I could go to see what I might be missing? Thank you.

Edit: The VIN number did not decode automatically so I had to use the drill down method. It seems anything above a 4500 isn't in the normal databases.

I had a similar predicament not on a Dodge but a Trailblazer where I was not getting the feed from the PCM to the starter relay and the security light was flashing sometimes and sometimes it didn't.One of the ground wires had corrosion 3 inches up the insulation.I found it just by accident by wiggling wires and harnesses and this ground wire just fell apart in my…

Matt, Thinking out loud here. Have you checked the VIN in every module? I am thinking someone may have played swap tronics here. If someone installed a different CCN, PCM, SKIM, or TIPM could have caused the modules to learn security. This is if the donor part had security. Also, have to checked the TRS?

Bob, (Robert?) I admittedly have not checked the VIN in ALL the modules. I don't know why I didn't think to go through every single one individually. The mix and match question did come to mind as I'm just baffled about the security issue, but it does have the hardware for it and I did program a key to no avail. I really don't believe that's the problem as I have no more security codes, save the…

This is a little off your subject, but I was curious due to an immobilizer on another make. So what I am reading is that a non immobilizer car can be programmed to be an immobilizer car? If so, can you undo it ?

The typical situation with a Chrysler will be that a car that does not have security goes to the wrong guy, who tries swapping this and that, and if ONE of the used modules he tries, had security enabled, it (basically) signals ALL the other modules that they should have security. The owner is sorta fffed after that. This a loose overview, of the "typical story".

Guy There is software out there which may or may not correct the issue depending on the module. Some of us have this software and we like to charge accordingly to correct these hackers mistakes:-)

Hi Matthew: You have a C&C (Cab & Chassis) vehicle. Why do you care? Because, sometimes, it matters. I don't know if you can do what I've written below. I use wiTECH 2.0 with a microPOD2. If it was me, I would run a ECU Details and ECU Configuration Report. I'd also run an ECU DTC Report. (I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy.) Save those reports. Look them over for installed modules…

Anthony, I'll run a configuration report today and an all module DTC report also. The last time I ran one there were no codes in any module but the ecm for the P0633. I'm aware of a situation on Chrysler vehicles where you can have a missing module on the network and it doesn't show up on generic scan tools. I haven't ever seen a VIN mismatch code in any module. The only time that has come up…

The customer says he bought this new and the keys he gave me were 2 standard black headed factory dodge keys. He says these are the only 2 keys he's ever used. My experience is that the heavy duty trucks, cab and chassis usually don't have security, It has all the hardware, but I believe it needs it for the system whether it's activated or not (which is shows inactive) but I was able to get a…

I am terribly sorry for taking so long for an update on this vehicle. All I have right now are diagnostic nightmares and this one kind of slid down my list. I have attached the scan of codes for all modules. I am including the scan with a B1A25 (Invalid Key) from the WCM. This has shown up once before which Is why I thought I would try programming a transponder key. I can clear the code and…

Matt! Thing sure seem peculiar here. Something is amuck here. If you can go into the EMIC(cluster) and see if VTSS is enabled. It should read disabled. Would be nice to know if any used modules have been tried. Can you read any of the VIN's in any of the modules? Maybe have a mobile tech come by and scan the vehicle with Witech or if you have a locksmith in your area who has Abrites he can tell…

This has moved to the (nearly) top of the list so I will have results tomorrow on the cluster information. I'll also double check all VIN numbers in all modules manually, one by one to be sure. I mean, if I can pin test the entire TIPM then that is a cake walk. I keep going back to swapped modules, but My customer is a 80+ year old guy and through the 3rd degree he has said what I wrote above…

Caleb, I have 2 laptops that I use for flashing, One has chrysler on it, but just flashing only. I also have a Cardaq Plus, and as far as passthrough devices also a Ford VCM II. Scanner I use most is my Autel Maxisys, I have the older DS 708 too, an OTC tha goes up to 2012 or so and auto engenuity that I haven't use in probably a year or more. I have probably around 11 scanners of one kind or…

It's a Cardaq Plus. I've been thinking I need to upgrade to the 3. I've already been unable to flash one jeep previously and I suspect that was the issue, or it was VIN locked from the dealer. I'll double check in the morning and verify.

Hi Matthew: I'm confused by your 3rd and 4th captures. The key is not recognized as being in the ignition in either of them. Please note that this could be a scan tool anomaly. Then again, the other PIDS could be scan tool anomalies also. You indicated that the tow bill would be considerable to take the vehicle to the shop with wiTECH. What is the "tow bill" to bring Mohammed to the…

Anothony, when I did the snapshot I didn't set the pids I wanted to see correctly, as I had all selected, so then I had to go into the recording and chose my pids and just show those, so it was only rendering information from what was on the screen at the time. I'm posting new pictures that make more sense now. I've got a call into my friend with Witech to see if his system is at all mobile and…

Update from this morning. I went into each module in the trick and verified the correct VIN in all modules that had that option available. Airbag system did not have that option. VIN was correct in every module. I then went into the WCM and checked vin, did a replace WCM command to see if I could get more information and do a relearn. The picture shows correct PIN entered. (still don't…

Hi Matthew: If this was a SKIM enabled vehicle, I'd say that you need new keys. It's not though. Without going back through every post, my gut is telling me that you have a defective TIPM. I had a situation with a smaller version of the truck where it took 4 to get a good one and that worked only because it was "new". The "bad" ones were Remans. That one only lasted a year, BTW. FWIW, the…

I am usually feel pretty confident about my diagnosis on things. I try to be very thorough. when I was at a stopping point with everything I could do I called a TIPM, and got one from the dealer. I've had terrible luck with remans in this era (hence the other 2 dodge trucks I have at my shop with TIPM problems). I'll feel the parts department out about getting a different one. if it didn't have…

Hi Matthew: In …e it wasn't clear, all of the TIPMs my customer installed came from the dealer. BTW, Justin posted something a l'il while ago and attached one of the reports that I was referencing. If you look at it, you can see that there is an Original VIN and a Current VIN for each module. With a Reman module, you may have a difference in these values. A Restore Vehicle Configuration…

It now becomes clear. Thank you. I wasn't aware that this was even a possibility. Silly me assumed this was a complete re-write of the VIN and would erase any stored values. Due to this being holidays I won't have information on the other shop's ability to perform this on site until 26th at the earliest and perhaps not until next Monday. I would really like to get this weight off my mind…

So it looks like I think I might have found my issue. I thought long and hard about the VIN mismatch and pulled out my old AutoEnginuity scanner i haven't used in several years and that doesn't give me any vin writing capabilities. it does however let me poll the VIN numbers in all modules original and present. I am going to assume this is my problem. Invalid original VIN numbers in the radio…

This truck is finally fixed. I hate to say it but I have a pretty good idea what fixed it, but I am still frustrated by what transpired. I am terribly sorry for the delay. To summarize the next steps. I had another mobile flashing guy come out to see if the WCM could be recoded for the faulty original VIN, and a restore vehicle configuration. He wasn't aware of that feature and when I walked…
