Honda V-TEC / VCM Function and Diagnosis
Here is the latest installment of Diagnostic Network videos on the subject of Honda V-TEC. This same technology is also used for cylinder deactivation on the Honda Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) System. This system has been around for quite long time but I had never seen a good breakdown of how it worked. Thanks to Diagnostic Network for the high quality video work!
Thanks Dave, we appreciate your support. It’s been a pleasure working with you and we especially want to thank Suffolk County Community College for their support as well.
David, the modules are now available with a subscription to Honda's service information. The nice thing is you no longer need to buy them individually that way.
Wow! What a great project guys! Thank you. It's pretty impressive to think that Honda started using this technology about 30 years ago and it has been a very reliable system relatively speaking. I can only recall having to look at/ diagnose one of these system once and this particular vehicle reminded me of Johnny Cash's One Piece At A Time song. A kind of Frankenstein's Honda. I recall having a hard time trying to find details about system operation criteria. This was years ago so, my memory fails me. I can't remember the details of that diagnostic but I do remember having a hard time finding the information I needed.
How is Honda when it comes to providing the service information needed to diagnose things like this?
My friend Pedro De La Tore recently reminded me that we have to be information specialist. This is something that I hope to continue to improve on.
Thanks again guys. I'm impressed.
Honda provides phenomenal info on these systems and Honda’s factory ”Sevice Information System” can be purchased for about $10 a day.
Thanks Brandon, I'll have to look back at the details of that vehicle. I can't remember what it was that I struggled with finding. I do remember that another shop (Honda Specialist actually) asked me to look at it for a low power complaint. I found that the VTEC system was not functioning and I was trying to determine if it had something to do with incompatibility (frankenstein's Honda), a failure or over site with the aftermarket tune or a legitimate coincidental failure. I do believe that we determined that it was something to do with the aftermarket tune but I recall getting frustrated with service information. I remember that the Honda specialist didn't have an answer for me either. I'm curious now. I'm going to see if I have notes on that car.
Let me know...I’ve become quite intimate with the VTEC/VTC /VCM systems
Very nice clear and quality video. Enjoyed it very much! Thanks for sharing.
Dave, Very well done! Thank You
Dave,Thanks for sharing and for all the work you put into your videos!
