Ford Chassis & Setting Speed Limiters?

Tyler Owner Gilbert, South Carolina Posted   Latest

We have a corporate client with a large number of E550 vehicles that are gas powered. They want to lower the maximum allowable speed that the vehicle can do. I am very familiar with this functionality in commercial HD trucks, but not so much with the smaller ones. In our world, these are light/medium duty trucks. This client has thousands of these vehicles, so they are looking to purchase a tool (as cheap as possible) to do this.

Is it possible to set this limit? If so, what tools will work?

We have an Autel and a TopDon (Knock off of Autel & Launch) and hooked up to our F150 and there is no option we could find. I don't have a F550 or E550 to try and test on.

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated!

I would think depending on the year you could do this from the drivers information center with the MyKey functions, earlier models would require a aftermarket tuner like HPTuners or EFILive. Those are the ways I am aware of, I hope others that are more familiar with this type of work will chime in soon.

It would be under programmable parameters using the IDS. They would have limited options for maximum speed, and I'm not sure every vehicle has it available.

Thank you. My assumption here is that only certain models/years have the functionality from what I've researched.

As Matthew said under programable parameter/modules. BTW; with a large fleet of Ford the only option is purchase of IDS.

You don't think Autel or Launch will be able to do it? Those tools just cracked/reverse engineered the Ford IDS software.

Half of the stuff that is reverse engineered doesn't work, or work as well. I would avoid recommending a safety setting be accomplished using such a tool. Also, since they are a Ford fleet it is actually cheaper for them to purchase the IDS. Hardware and software subs are much cheaper for fleet customers.

It depends on the specific vehicle and model year. MyKey is one way, setting the vehicle maximum speed via a scan tool is another way. Lousy tools such as Autel and Launch sell are viable for these vehicles. IDS is very inexpensive and very easy to use. Considering anything other than IDS would be absurd for a large fleet.

We have had this come up on a F550 before. We may have missed the location in the tool but were unable to find the top speed adjustment in the cluster manually (My Key not available in F550 we tried) or in Programmable Parameters in the IDS. We looked through all the modules but could not find a top speed adjustment. We will look for one to try again on this coming week. The IDS is the factory

The only vehicle I was able to see this on before (as an option in IDS) was on the F53 panel truck/ motor home chassis. I am not sure if its in there for regular F or E series

Hi Tyler, I ran into a shop that had a F550 in the bay this week. I hooked up the IDS and there is a switch for speed control. I believe this value is for Cruise Control. It was the only option close to what you are asking for. Checked Instrument Cluster, no option there. This would be something that HP Tuners may be able to apply for you. I have attached a screenshot from the HP Tuners
