2008 Nissan Altima key programming problem, bushbutton start

No Run

I programmed keys and car started and ran except cvt transmission parameter was not set correctly. In attempting to change parameter, key settings were lost or erased. Now I can't get pushbutton to change to run mode, so can't re-program keys. I followed procedures, turn on hazard lights, pin code, etc. but steering lock or un-lock does not work either so key programming can't proceed until pushbutton will go to “run”. Additionally, when trying different ideas, holding the door key to un-lock or holding the key fob buttons down, the windows rolled down and won't roll up again. So how to get to “run” mode?

The steering lock solenoid is probably faulty .if it is faulty you will never get it to run mode. It is common for these to fail without warning especially in a car that old.

I think I have some other problem. When I was trying to program the original BCM, which did work until then. I managed to erase the keys in that one also, then I had the same symptoms. There must be a way to re-program the BCM on the bench or turn on the BCM in the car so it can be programmed. Perhaps bypass the steering lock.

What tool are you using for this job? That will dictate how to solve. Tool should perform unlock to allow run mode for programming keys to finish

Thank you. I am using Think Car Pad 10 at the moment, but have tried others. The trouble with these tools is they don't tell you why it doesn't work. I will see if steering lock is bad.

NO tool performs unlock procedure, I am waiting on additional parts to test with. Procedure seems correct.

Hit steering lock. Don’t use thinkpad for this it has failed me many times for these exact vehicles use propad if you can set it up foe me to login I’ll take a look for you for free of course. You’re failing because steering isn’t unlocking it is a hard fault for this job won’t go any further

You are correct about the problem, it will not unlock. I tried one of those steering lock testers, replacing the steering lock and it made no difference. I tried another key fob socket and another pushbutton sw with no results. Does not work with another BCM either, I suppose I could have a broken wire but the thing worked before, until I accidentally erased the keys, now the steering lock…

I agree with Louie, it's very common issue, try to hit the steering lock with a solid object a few times and see if it unlock.

If course, I have heard of this before, but did not relate it to my problem which did happen suddenly. I will check this out.

Usually, you'll still have comm with the BCM, even if the SCLM is locked out. You should even have some codes for it in the BCM.

I have no codes, I tried a test tool to replace the lock with no luck. It looks like the immo is locked out. I have comm with the BCM and you can test some things like the ignition relay which goes on, but still won't turn on the “run” button. I can't see how the antenna could be bad but will try to test it. This car has a slot to put fob in. I put fob in slot and disconnected battery, then…

I had been struggling with an 07 Altima for a while it came to my shop as a no start from another shop not sure what they did but they had replaced the slot and try to program keys, my symptoms were exactly the same as yours, I tried replacing the steering lock and key slot with no success I eventually resorted to getting a used Bcm and key slot from the local junkyard I made sure it was the…
