Programming Issue

So I have one I am trying to decide if it is an IDS issue or a vehicle issue. As most are aware, Ford broke their IDS software last year. Many things have improved but I wonder if others got broken along the way. On this particular pickup, during programming, the IDS software reads the calibration and then suggests it is up to date or it needs updating. In today's case, this screen comes up both calibration numbers are absent. I was running v.115 so I update to v.116.04 as suggested by IDS software. I get the same result. I can go into mode 9 and see the calibrations. The tool is just not picking them up during programming. If this is something others are experiencing, I will let the customer know we need to wait for a patch, if not it could be a bad PCM. All other communication seems fine. I have programmed other ECUs over the last few days without issue. It has been a while since I programmed a 6.7 ECU.

The few I have done went through with no issues. Only the issue I have had was with the breather hose update not being done.

This one has had the breather update. Chances are the PCM is up to date anyway.

Did you check the calibration numbers against the free resources on the Ford site?

Justin, The calibration numbers and letters do not match any of the catch words on the Ford website. I have had little success using their database.

Hi Mike: Look in the Audit Trail and see if the calibration number is different there. If so, compare that to the Ford site. BTW, those word thingies have meaning. "Programming" is programming. "Reprogramming" is reprogramming. They are not the same thing and the verbiage used shouldn't be the same either. HTH, Guido

Michael, Did you check the calibration on this site: motorcraftservice.com/diagnostic/Sup… Also the IDS Sessions Folder contains the inhaled vehicle's configuration/calibration information in the files that are stored there. The PCM Catch Word along with all other PCM info should be in the .val file for the vehicle. You should be able to find the information that you are looking for in one…

Walter, Thanks for the info. I was not aware of this site. I have always used the Free Resources part of the site to access. I will check on my IDS tool and see what is in there.

I updated a 2014 6.7L last week with version 116.04 and had no issues.

May have a tune in it that is preventing it from being overwritten. Ask the owner? If it does and you flash it the tune is gone. BUT the easiest way to flash it if You’re not sure it has the latest or not is a “blank install”. I don’t have the time to spell it out. Google it or search one of the sites. Simple fix. You will not need to do PATS BuT you quite likely will need to enter the trans…

The ones I have found like that have ended up being corrupted by a custom non Ford program. Ask the customer, if they won't admit it or don't know or are a new owner then explain it to them and explain that they may need a new PCM to fix their problem. Make sure to explain that the custom program is probably there to cover up missing or fault parts. One was bricked when I tried to perform the…

The last one that I tried to reprogram that had a programmer in it gave me this message. If it doesn't have a twin exhaust tip it has had a DPF delete.

Have you tried As Built Data to program it? Tell the IDS it is a new unit and try that. If that doesn't work I have to agree with others, it is likely it has a tune kit on it that is making it not program. If all your data is there and you can view scan data or perform bi-directional controls, it likely is not the ECU. However, you may at the end of the day have to install a new ECU to program…

We ran into that a few weeks ago. Customer purchased an auction truck ('11 F-350 6.7) and performed EGR delete. Then them, or someone they hired attempted to install a tune to make it run without the EGR system. Something went wrong somewhere along the line and it got towed to me. Luckily, we were busy and didn't get the chance to look at the truck for a few days. The customer happened to "just…

UPDATE Thank you all for your suggestions. Since the vehicle starts and runs, I kicked it down the road with the caveat that it will need a replacement PCM if the codes the updates were to fix come back. This is a government truck so I don't suspect a tune. BTW, I did push as built data into the PCM by placing the .ab file from the motorcraft website into my programming files folder. It went…

I just did one yesterday using v116.00, '15 6.7L. No issues at all I will say that since updating to Windows 10 I get file error code when I check for IDS updates
