Has anybody been able to make a used DME work? Vehicle is 15 years old new DME is $1700 part! I have always been told it wont work/cant do it..... but have not actually tried it my self. DME has no communication + found signs of water damage to one of the connectors. It appears the cowl seal is out of place.

Bill, Unfortunately not. Anything past 2000 is a no. Especially with a CAS.

You can if you have an AutoHex that is the only programmer I know that can write to a used DME

Justin, what if he has matching key, tumbler and EWS with the used Ecm? I’ve done it on e46 but unsure what years the ews updated and if 2005 x5 is same set up

If you have a key, EWS DME and in other cases possibly Light module and cluster. I don't advise changing all of them. But shops do and it does work. Just don't loose the keys or you have to start all over. There are company's out there that can wipe ECU info. None I'm familiar with enough to recommend.

Hey Domenic, Here is some EWS Information which i'm sure will help others in the future. Rule of thumb is if the vehicle has EWS II or above, there will have to be some trickery to get the used DME to work and may run into ODO mileage discrepancy or vehicle order (SA) issues if it isn't done right. EWS II and below? Minor coding involved if even that. Also want to mention that the vehicle…

We have done DME replacement up to 2015 BMW vehicles with Autohex Software. The software does all the heavy lifting. It takes about 90 minutes for E91 chassis. We have done Minis in 15 minutes. No trickery, just awesome software. Used transmissions can also be mated to BMW vehicles with this product. The only drawback is if you need tech support you are up all night as the software comes from…

Mike My impression has always been with a solution like this that there will always be certain functions that are impossible without OE scantool and legit subscription to OE website etc etc. Obviously these solutions provide alternatives to OE, such as installing used modules which may not always be possible with OE tools. However, in the case of Autohex, I was reading on their site, they are…

Maynard, I use the OE tools as well as Aftermarket ones. In my case I have chosen to offer solutions that others don't bother with. The OEM tools work well with new parts in a fully functional vehicle. In the case of BMW, lose communication to the right module and you have to get it operational before the OEM tool will let you move forward. This is despite the fact you are replacing a…

Michael are you using the professional programming software with the Autohex 2? I see they offer several different setup's.. I am somewhat interested in the tooling as BMW is my highest volume car line... Although I am not big fan of recommending used parts some common issues/ modules on 10-15 year old BMW's can nearly take them off the road or leave them driven with safety systems not…

Hi Bill, We are using the full package of software. We tried to use a partial subscription but soon learned it was not enough. There are different methods required for each series of BMW. Most of what we see are E90 and E91 which are done over the OBD port. Newer F Series vehicles are done on the bench. Older than E90 are not well covered. We end up doing them another way. So far there has not…

It can be done if you unlock the DME using tools that nobody will tell you about, it’s like a secret society. But Autohex will do it for sure. Not worth the price to do one. But just to plug it in and attempt to “program” or align it with the car will not work. And other will say get the works from a used car. If you’re a professional shop do you really want your customer riding around with the…

I got a support request on Fri that involves that type of solution Sam. After swapping all that, customer ordered a key from BMW. Car runs fine, customer wanted two keys. It wont work with the dealer key now. No VIN stored in CAS or DME. It would’ve been a good car to try to use that e sys on, we have the software but we just never tried to use it on a car. We are a little scared of it.

I have used both RaceIQ and Pressertech. You can send the original DME and donor DME and they can write in the VIN. Usually about half the cost of repair with new parts.

Hey Bill you can get a used DME and Brinsen company In Louisiana can unlock them and then you have to install and reprogram to the car and realign Ews. I think Beckmann technologies can unlock as well

Good point on the emissions test. We had one a few years back that someone got to work with a used unit, how they did it I'm not sure (Auction Car). That being said it failed the emissions test due to the incorrect VIN and the state would not budge on it, the car ended up back on the auction block.

I do a few of these a month. It is nice not having to pay the BMW ransom to get an old car back on the road. Depending on model of ECU it can be done on the bench or in the car. On the bench requires the immobilizer and both ECUs. It is a matter of matching the component protection part of the firmware. They call it the ISN code. The VIN is corrected in the process. Sometimes if the ECU is…
