A fellow had this car towed in, customer complaint Wont start. Showed missing the front clip saying it came from Canada and went off the highway and the chassis got twisted, went to the frame shop and no one could make it run for 2 years. I found paperwork in the car from a Cadillac dealer and called them. They said it was in the shop for 15 months 4 years ago and they couldn't establish communication with the car. The customer then fessed up and said he bought it to rebuild from Copart and it didn't come with any key fobs. Long story short I got it running but I have the TPS not as expected code. At home now and can't remember the code. I replaced the throttle body, The car looked like it sat out engine exposed. Wires colors faded and had to pull back the wire looms to see the color on the wires and the throttle body was corroded and had no air gap around the throttle plate. In the scan tool data it says throttle body learn performed No, throttle body learn required yes, throttle learn in process no and is in reduced power mode now. I never had a domestic car require this and none of my tooling has a throttle learn feature in it for this car. I have throttle reset feature but it doesn't help. I have TPS 1 and 2 agree, TPS 1 and 2 6% but TPS 1 volts is of by .1V from stored. It also starts without hitting the brake for some reason and the switch has been tested at the BCM. Long story short high I had no com with any modules on high speed can when started. The interior look to have a water line 3 inches up, windows are stuck down, BCM had to be replaced being in the pass side floor. The suspension control module had signs of water in it and jumped the can wires and that is in short to keep the post as short as possible. The customer has yet to supply the front clip that includes the Mas air flow sensor and radiator.

Lucky you. Sounds like an exercise in frustration that will never end. I’d prefer rubbing sand in my eyes while chewing broken glass than get involved with that.

Hi Bruce, From what you described, this deal sounds shady. Sounds like the customer picked it up for practically nothing but the price of getting it towed away. Don't let this vehicle drain your time or money. The customer brought you a real ‘cream puff’ to work on. Usually with these kind of jobs, I get 8 hours minimum pay up front, then charge in 4 hour blocks of time. The customer has to…

This has a class 2 serial bus Data combs splice packs x2. The scan tool could communicate with those modules but the scope showed a dirty signal. Used the uIsolate network Isolator and weeded out the modules that were making the noise. I had absolutely no communication with the GM high and low speed can and it does not have a comb it is a series circuit that runs through all of the modules on…

It was at copart for a reason. There are other jobs to make money on and this isn't one of them. Don't sweat this one, push this thing to the curb.

Hi Bruce. The XLR was essentially a marriage of Corvette and Northstar, with everything tuned for a Cadillac ride. Unfortunately, you married yourself to a vehicle that is well beyond it's “best before date” and if ever fixed would probably be flogged off to some unsuspecting buyer! You best idea is to get a divorce! Get paid for what you have managed to restore and move on. Front end damage…

I know these cars, they are basic to todays standards I'm used to and consider them basic with a bunch of failing discontinued electronics. My only job is to make it run and I'm done. I get this stuff towed in all the time with the good luck remark from the tow truck driver saying I've been towing this thing all the place for a year now. They're good teachers and I make dam good money because of…

Good for you, as long as you know what you're accepting Bruce and have the skills to handle what you decide to tackle. Many shops do not and even though it and it's Corvette sibling were pretty basic by todays standards, it takes a bit of time without interruptions to focus on some of the weird maladies. There are a few specialists for some of the failing modules, either able to supply or…

Hats off to you Bruce, I have been working on the roof of one of only 3 XLRs in the entire of the UK. Multiple fixes (pump, wires, sensors, microswitches, corroded pins) later and Tech2win will not calibrate the roof unless you can operate it - which you can't because it needs calibrating… Had to buy a Tech2 just to finish the job (this week.. I hope!). Amazing work rescuing your patient and…

Just finished this one. Yup MAF wasn't as expected so the throttle shut down. Weird it didn't set a code for it. With the old sensor prior to going into reduced power mode the engine flared and settled down right away. With a new sensor it flares up and settles down slowly and the message in the data line says throttle learned now. I called the customer and told him to bring a blank check…
