Snap On Triton
Hello All and especially Rich Shepherd :-)
I am looking at replacing a Modis Ultra with a Triton D8. I got a price today from a truck that seemed pretty good.
For my particular needs, Snap On appears to be the only option. On top of that, I have grown to like the Modis. I often work in parking lots with no shade and a good deal of wind. I'm done dropping or having my laptop and Pico fly off a fender.
I have a question or two and then a request.
- I was told by the Snap On salesman that I can buy it without purchasing the "intelligent" whatever they call it... I have ZERO interest in that. I simply want to buy it and keep it updated each year. I also have ZERO interest in service info on the tool. Well, if they want to throw it in for free I wouldn't turn it down :-)
- Is it essentially a Modis with faster hardware and extra hardware for the intelligent stuff?
Before buying a Triton, I need a scan data capture, I'm assuming that would be an SCM file. It doesn't matter what it is or how long it is, I just need an SCM file from a Triton. The purchase hinges on this.
PS... Please no "get an Autel" replies. Autel is not serious about data acquisition and analysis.
I have a verus and was going to get a triton but was not impressed I think if anything I would get a an old verus or verus egde in my opinion
I have verus in like new condition with accessories I would sell to you software needs updating
Jim Explain your comment about Autel, reason being I was looking in purchasing Autel Maxisys ultra being it supports many functionality has a snap-on Zeus but at a lower cost....
Edward, I think I can explain what Jim means about the Autel. The Autel is a powerful scan tool with functions that often are as good and sometimes better than the factory tool. However, like Jim, I like to download files off of the scan tool and graph out a test drive. I can do that easily with the Snap On files, either the SCM files or the PIDS files from the Ultra, the Edge, and the Verus or…
Hi Edward The Autel may be a better fit for you. It does have some functionality that Snap On doesn't have, but I have little interest in that. I develop training material and assist technicians both remotely and visiting their shops. For that I need a tool that is serious about data acquisition. Unless things have changed, I don't see that with Autel. Autel seems to be focused on "acquiring"…
Jim I greatly appreciate your input, and I agree 💯 will your analysis i use the same information and was unaware that Autel might not support these features,I will be following up will Autel to verify if there is any support in this area.... Thanks again 👍🤠
There is so, so much more. Speed has always been my complaint with PID update rate. I recently took 4 different scan tools and measured their timing between PID requests and response times. It varies by a bunch. The fastest overall rate was 91 ms to update all 6 PIDs with the slowest at 1.02 seconds. Request from scan tool after receiving the PID (time for the scan tool to request next PID) was…
Some correlated names would be appreciated.
Thanks Randy It is often disappointing for sure. I probably need to watch the pros on YouTube so I can get better at using the tools :-)
My teammate has a D8. I'll get some SCM files off it and post them here.
Thank you !! Very helpful and what I hoped it to be
No problem! If you don't mind, what were you looking for? I've looked at files from my Ultra and the D8, and couldn't tell a difference. But that doesn't mean there isn't one.
I have the Apollo D8, which has the same display and main case, and I assume has the same hardware minus the scope module. It is a … tool with the coverage limitations and software errors that are typical of Snap-On. The display quality is very …. My main disappointments with it are its slowness, lack of ability to function on a network (no printing), and that it defaults to Intelligent…
Hi Marlin Thanks for your input. I transfer files all the time without ShopStream Connect. When you connect it to your PC, the tool is essentially another drive. I move things around using Windows file explorer
I know what you are using it for so I'm putting this here merely for a reference when you are looking at the data captures. Be on the lookout for pids that are non responsive and incorrect on the enhanced side. Not manipulated but just for some reason not correct when comparing side by side with another scanner also on enhanced. Also have been seeing incorrect codes being pulled that I have no…
Thanks Tanner Yep, I've seen that as well. I have been getting more and more mileage out of the generic side for driveability stuff. Dang... never imagined I'd say that or admit I like a SO scan tool :-)
Jim...for generic scanning I use the Escan. Its quite the powerful tool.
Interesting. I'm sure you're being genuine in this. Thank you for that. I'm sure it will help someone. I'm familiar with it and the claims. I see no extra value to what I already have. I would simply have less money and another laptop to drag around. Perhaps this will explain why. The 2008 definitions gave us some cool tools. In this capture I have added VE as a PID for comparison. I don't…
- Correct you can buy it with just current software (Coverage). Depending on how often you plan to update it, it may be more cost effective to look at one of the plans that includes regular updates. Those come with the features you are not interested in along with current coverage. Check with your dealer and see what is the most cost effective for you based on your plans. - It is a later…
Jim Looks like Autel doesn't support any SCM files at this time, and greatly appreciate your input.. Thanks
