Good Training Manuals
Hello everyone, I am trying to find some good training manuals . I do have some ATG'S but that's about it don't get me wrong the ATG'S are great but I have heard the more tools you have the greater your chances are of success. ANY help would be great thank you.
Hi Nolan, That is a pretty tall order. What do you specialize in? That would be the direction I suggest you concentrate your training efforts. General knowledge of all systems is good, but it can also send you in many wrong directions The industry is becoming more specialized every day because vehicle are more complex. The days of the “all makes and systems” technicians is fading…
I focus more on diagnostics, my usual workday is mostly no-starts I see some many. They are mostly from other shops, Nissan for sore is the highest count then Chevy and ford with Honda on the side. I would say specialize would definitely be Nissan because I see so many. The dealers here do not support the many vehicles they don't sell so there are many without a true support structure . And on…
Hi Nolan. A workbook is simply contains a series of exercises related to practical procedures or diagnostic routines, associated with the learning material. In competency-based learning, theory and concepts are usually described and discussed in the classroom instructor-led environment, then followed with shop activities in an associated workbook. I am sure that you've likely encountered them…
I will be straightforward, I need something more of a guide with my diagnostic help. Knowing exactly what you are working on I think is number one. I would like to streamline my diagnostic time down as much as I can. Get a direction within minutes of touching the vehicle this is a sign of a true professional. Where I live I see mechanics be on cars for days with no sense of direction just…
Hi Nolan, Can you provide some information to help us help you? - Are you a general traveling technician or do you have a shop? 2. Do you have a service information program like All Data or Mitchell On Demand? 3. What do you consider a sense of direction? There are preliminary inspection checklists that may help. 4. Why not practice on you own vehicle(s), especially electrical. It is best…
Sorry for the far and wide reply times, my internet is not the greatest just one more thing that needs an update, I am trying desperately to become an efficient mobile diagnostic tech. There is no shop for me at this time . Yes, I do have service information systems, All Data, and Mitchell On Demand on CD and access to identifix. A sense of direction to me would be to be able to distinguish what…
Nolan. Take a look at the sel-directed mini-course on GMLAN that I just posted, with pdf slides, workbook and answer book. For any on-vehicle measurements you can use almost any GM vehicle from … for basic HS GMLAN, without a Serial Data Gateway Module. Even for vehicles with Generation 1 SDGMs, primary GMLANs are accessible on Global A vehicles. Generation 3 SDGMs rolled out around…
Nolan. Every vehicle you work on, can provide potential for learning when “off the clock”. There's no fast track only through “training manuals” to gaining more efficient diagnostic skills. Why not, for each vehicle, create a baseline data resource of good known scan, scope and or measurement data? I did that and still do on each new model that I encounter. That is down to sometimes hours each…
Hi Martin, All good advice, I still have a bunch of print off's from known good and bad testing to refer too from time to time. It has saved me lots of wasted time. I use to keep many on a computer and jump drive, but got tired of crashed or a corrupted jump drive issue. “Made for You Tube case studies” help, but many viewers do not realize the editing and polishing of the content involved. I…
Hello, I have seen and experienced and used for teaching, tec-help.com manuals and teaching materials. I think they are worth a look at. I also teach with Cengage today’s technician series manuals at the college and found them to be interesting and comprehensive. Good learning, Chester
Yup. Nolan--listen to Rudy. You can't beat ATG for how to go about diagnostics efficiently, charge fairly for it, and make the customer happy. Just email ATG, and ask them which manuals have the most detailed explanations of their Level 1 and 2 diagnostics. The “Service Writers” webinar was great for that. And if the service writer doesn’t understand the system, now you have two people to…
Hi Bob and Nolan, I get a kick out of customers who have already paid 1,2 or ever a 3rd shop, then come to me. Usually their first comment is “I hope you're not going to charge me too much, I've already paid these other guys $$$ money". Sadly, I have to say yes, I am going to charge. Of course I also resolve the issues. ATG has some great offerings that take time and application to adapt too…
Hello Mister Hunt, I have come across this ASE A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems study guide book from Motor Age Training and was wondering is this a work book . And if not do you have any suggestions . I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your great guidance thank you SIR.
Hi Nolan, All of the Motor Age ASE prep guides are pretty good, but it takes a bit of prior working knowledge and a good grasp of electrical circuits. It would likely confuse a new candidate trying to learn electrical and electronics.
I started out in the industry as self taught and manuals were a big part of that for me. I've since learned I do far far better with training instructors and workbooks. one benefit of Covid is there are piles and piles of training nearly every day available to you online and it covers anything you could ever want. I would definitely think about that. CTI has a phenomenal training program and…
Hi Nolan. The best tool that you have, is the one between your ears! Many of the training manuals provide some useful general information or specific vehicle systems and may integrate case studies presented by almost Godly “wizards”, with every imaginable tooling resource available at their disposal. Not every technician or shop has an cache of tools and may need to utilize alternate methods…
Hi Martin, Thanks for the honorable mentions. You brought up a lot of good points. With that said, I have told many techs in shops that I visit, that 5 minutes of reading saves 50 minutes of guessing. They really get confused when I ask them right off “did you read the service information”? Their reply is usually: “I thought you would know so I don't have to read up on it”. My answer back to…
scannerdanner, not only is there a book but lots of webinar recordings and case study videos. The book is around a hundred bucks and membership goes the website i think I pay 11 dollars a month for. Best info out there for the price. And stay with atg too. Each one of they’re classes is equal to about ten years of self taught on the job. theyre are online classes from most manufactures that you…
I would like to add to all the great suggestions… Watch Bernie Thompson YouTube videos. Every one is a great lesson.
