Bcm Vin Not Programming

Hey Yall, seems nothing ever wants to go by the book with some things. got this 08 Malibu towed in with no crank no star, diagnosed bad BCM, no communication ect. replaced with a new GM part, went in with Tech2Win and followed the programming instructions via alldata. click setup module, module then goes Invalid VIN. checked and no vin. tried to do the copy and flash, it told me NEW part detected. this module does not show up in SPS. Autel, Snappy, are no help. not sure what im doing wrong here. anyone got any ideas? the car starts and runs with the new bcm in it. but giving me air bag, traction control and steering faults.

It sounds to me like someone programmed that module and returned it. Perhaps you could try BPP calibration and SDM part number learn first and see if you still have codes for invalid VIN but based on my knowledge it should run a sequence of utilities (including vin write) after selecting “module setup.” I don't know why but I've had several GM BCM's from dealers in sealed boxes that already had…

Here's a paste of dtc B1001:00 from identifix which I believe confirms our suspicions. I also confirmed that the VIN in the BCM is a one-time write (at least with tech2win.) "DTC B1001 00: SDM Option Configuration Error Circuit/System Description The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) stores the vehicles restraint ID from the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the…

Scott , the function is in autel, cant remember where, sometimes they put them strange places. Check, BCM special functions, IMMO special functions, RCM (SDM) special functions, Hot functions. It will say something about storing primary key into BCM.

The b1001 will remain until you write VIN in the bcm, I always do it with the tech 2, no aftermarket tool will write the VIN and miles. I don't use tech2win so I don't know the menu layout but on tech 2 you go to vehicle control/ then module set up /bcm then will ask you to type VIN and confirm mileage. If in that menu says vin locked that means someone already tried with an aftermarket tool or…

Just a warning about using the Tech 2 to do “Copy and Flash” under module setup; I had one recently that ended up a total snafu. 2011 Buick. (2012, according the GM chart, was programmable with SPS but the 2011 comes programmed but not “set up.”) The original BCM would not light brake or backup lights, or operate the trunk release, but would respond to the scan tool commands to do all those…

Writing the VIN does nothing for the configuration of the SDM ‘key’ in the BCM, and vice-versa, as that is totally a separate function. Mileage can also be a totally separate function, depending on Y/M/M. In most cases, you don't need to set the mileage, except on an IP change. A Tech 2 is definitely the tooling of choice for this, although SPS should have a setup for later vehicles, but this…

Tim, Maybe I was mistaking the code he was getting with the “ sdm key ” problem. That is the only code I ever get replacing a GM body control module. The autel has cured it every time so far. A friend has the high end Bosch tool, His has the option to fix the sdm key, but just doesn't work. He has brought me 2 now and we reset them with the autel. Like I say maybe this is something different…

The B1001 error code, comes from the SDM key not being registered in the new BCM. Once the ‘key’ is transferred, the code will clear, and the SRS light will go out. Usually cannot be reset with a used/salvage module. Since I don't use AM tooling for GMS, as I have all the tooling for it, I have no idea whether the A tooling works with a GM. The other advantage with the GM stuff, is you can be…

Well yall, I tried my factory Tech 2 and kept getting Candi errors. so with some down time I played with Tech2Win for a bit, verified all my info and what not. decided to try different years in the scanner, set the year to 2007 at random on the tech2, it worked. went to bcm setup and it proceeded as normal. checked the door tag and its 06/08, does not make sense why it worked but yeah. all good…
