No Power steering
Customer brought vehicle with no power steering. This vehicle has had the electric steering rack/motor/module replaced with a used unit. The power steering module communicates with no issues and I attempted to perform the stop resets and re-learns. Still nothing makes it work properly as far as providing assist for steering. The only code present in the power steering control module is the C0565-5a which is for VIN not plausible and its current and wont clear.
My questions are... can a used unit even be installed and expected to work in the first place? Is it possible to program it and rectify the vin code issue and would that bring the power steering back up? is it possible for the used unit to be faulty with no other trouble codes present and not be a vin mismatch issue?
Sorry for all the questions, it's just for me I don't get these gm's in all the time, and thanks in advance for any help
Need a dealer level scan tool to program it and good to go
This might be a global A system. Which means used cannot be used. I will check and get back.
You are going to need a new module. We ran into this several months ago with a used car lot and an auction vehicle. Even with factory GM tools and programming ability, we were unable to change the VIN and complete proper programming for the vehicle.
Has to be a new rack. That fault sets because the rack is used and the VIN does not match the rest of the vehicle. You could try to program it with SPS but I doubt it will work. Needs a new rack. This has been discussed many times on this site. The car is a Global A network platform. Most of the modules can not be virginized.
And yes, as has been stated, this is a Global system. You cannot put used modules in these vehicles.
2012 Equinox is car is a Global A product. Technically not reprogrammable.... You should try to program it with SPS before saying it can't be done. I have successfully programmed many Global A vehicles with SPS. Never give a guarantee just try it.... And there always options of eeprom editing. Otherwise you need a new one and then programming
We actually had a customer "brick" 3 other modules in the vehicle trying to put in used components.

I had programmed at least 5 Equinox with Used electric power steering through SPS all programmed fine, no issues, Just make sure that the correct year power steering is installed. I had one customer that after trying to program a 2012 Equinox found out he put one from 2014 Equinox, I couldnt finish because part and year difference, nothing got brick, Customer came back 2 days later with the…
It is possible to program Global A Modules autodynamicservices.com/tools%2Fequipm… autodynamicservices.com/tools%2Fequipm…
As long as is same part # it will program and work fine. I did a 2020 equinox today with a used rack just reprogram the vin and do sas centering and stops learn
Sadel, You need to correct the VIN in the Power Steering module to clear code. As Jorge has mentioned IO Terminal will work with many GM EPS racks. Kevin Suttorp has done some EEPROM board level work on these as well. Officially, GM does not like using second hand parts. Many of us have searched the globe for solutions. The IO Terminal tool is the best solution I have found so far. It can read…
Thank you all for the great responses and all the good information, advice and personal experience with this situation. I think that being I am at least the second or third shop with this vehicle, I will recommend going with new dealer part, but it is definitely interesting how the responses went from without a doubt stating new part only , to taking a swing over to yes used can or has been done…
Let us know how it goes. I guess the reason for such a broad spectrum of answers is for a few reasons: 1 can it be done with "standard" equipment / job box / OE software. 2 is module from identical vehicle ? I personally have had racks 2 used racks on a 14 malibu from a 14 malibu fail, reman part worked. Many techs / shops have to outweigh the cost and time of eeprom / risk of bad used part vs…
Prior to posting the question on this last night, I had contacted about having this programmed by my mobile programmer. I had responded to him later at night and told him that after some responses on here that I was going to just price out a new unit. Today I called him yet again and said that there were some others on here that responded with saying they had success with sps on used units, I…
