O2 readiness monitor
Hi All, Vehicle I'm working on is a 2012 Ford Econoline E350 6.8l V10 1FTSE3ES7CDB16735 GVWR 9500. Customer came in with failed emissions test due to O2 and O2 heater monitors not ready. Said it has been like this since July of 2020 when they changed emissions from tailpipe test to enhanced obd on vehicles over 8500 gvwr. Every other monitor has run and passed including evap, misfire, catalyst, comprehensive and fuel. He doesnt drive it a lot but has put on over 5000 miles since then. He said all his 02 sensors have been replaced and had a Ford dealer update pcm software without any change. I have reset kam, cleared codes and disconnected battery and tried a few cold soak start drive cycles as well as warm drive cycles and can get all monitors except those two to set. I've monitored data with no obvious issues - fuel trims +- 6%, cts 195, fuel level between ½ and ¾, iat in spec as well as all other relevant data. A few other things to note is mode 9 performance tracking show plenty of O2 completions see pics and Mode 6 test results all show passed except 2 under the O2 monitor labeled manufacture specific tests id number $85 and $86 but have a value of 0 and min/max values of 0. Thinking it's still a software issue but any help is appreciated,
Thanks,
Joe
Have you tried to call whoever runs your states emissions program? I had a problem with a gmc 2500 that wouldn't run the monitors. Finally plugged in to the inspection machine and it ran through fine. I guess ny knew those monitors wouldn't run and it could pass anyway. Since this program is new in ct they may not be aware of this problem, or may have a way to let it pass. We were warned when I…
yeah I have a call in to them to see if there's a way around this problem.
Jo; Have u tried to look at the wiring at the 2 o2 sensors. Make sure what u need is there at the time u need it? Measure the power and grounds and the heater circuits. Make sure the ECM can and is controlling them. Do they match the catalyst efficiency test? Did u try to look at the pre and post O2 sensors at the same time, along with ST fuel trims? Just some thoughts.
I did monitor the O2's while driving and all looked well within spec. I didnt get a chance yet but am going to check heater current when I get it back in.
P1000 means all tests have not been completed but when Mode 6 shows Min Value at 0 and Max at 0 that makes me think it is a software issue, maybe just because they had a PCM update doesn't necessarily mean they turned the O2 monitors on. just my 2 cents
My thought too. Trying to research calibration numbers to see if they are right for this vehicle.
I have found on later model vehicles that distance of uninterrupted steady cruise is necessary for O2 monitors to run. Had to increase my distances about two fold-over ten miles to get them to go. Had an '18 E250 that I had ids running to make sure I was where it wanted it and all but given up(actually doing it for another shop that was struggling with the setting of monitors and asked me to…
I tried doing some longer steady cruise drives but still no good.
Quick question does the vehicle have federal Emissions?
Attached is a drive cycle. I'm sure you already have it. But the five decels have always tripped me up.
Thanks I do have that info. The top drive cycle is for fiesta and the bottom is for all others but I tried both anyway with no success.
Bentley gave you the answer. Your software is good, you are just not getting into decel fuel cut or not long enough. Mode 6 is telling you that. Mode 9 is telling you the front O2 monitors are completing. There should be another set for the secondary O2 monitors and those should not be counting up.
I have tried several drive cycles using Ford procedures and still no good plus the fact that the customer has put over 5,000 miles in the last year and a half and still not completing. Mode 6 is telling me that pre o2's are passing and post o2's are passing except manufacture specific tests $85 and $86 but again the value is 0 and min/max are 0 so how could it even run that test let alone pass…
I was really busy today so I did not have time to explain so let me try now. The following PDF is where Ford shares the information you need: fordservicecontent.com/ford_content/c….pdf Start at the end of page 103: J1979 DFSO response rate Mode $06 Data Monitor ID Test ID Description $02 $85 HO2S12 Fuel Shut off Rich to Lean Response Rate (P013A) mV/sec $02…
Thank you for the explanation and information it is very much appreciated. The mode 9 not having the secondary o2 was throwing me off too but I will try another scan tool today as well as a different driving approach and data monitoring based on the info you gave me. Will update with additional findings. Thanks again.
Kind of odd Cat passed while o2 didn't … Ford in Generic OBD II not really that uncommon to have some Non Continuous min/max/value come up all 0000 because scan tool dont know it's talking to ,this goes back to an 06 Taurus but blank gets a Result: Passed we've all seen it and ignored it … What TID/Component are 85 86 any chance its Diesel . Randy's Enabling Criteria post is interesting with…
