Pilot program to renew ASE certifications online

Christopher Technician Texas Posted   Latest   Edited

I thought some of you might be interested in a new ASE program which is currently in open beta that'll allow previously A1-A8 certified technicians to extend their certifications online, thereby eliminating the need to go to a test center.

The way it works is pretty simple; you'll answer timed questions that are delivered once a month via the app or your browser. Once you earn 8 credits (1 correct answer = 1 credit), your certification is extended by one year. The cost is $48/yr and the program is currently set to run through 2020.

Now that's some progressive thinking. I'll be glad to get signed up and help this along.

Doing some calculations, it looks like if a person needed to recertify for eight tests, it would work out to a cost of $33/yr to do the old fashioned testing, so $48/yr for eight tests may be worth it for the convenience of not having to go to those test centers. Plus, if the shop pays for it, then that's even better 🙂 If a person only has one recertification test, then it wouldn't make

Currently we do not have plans to add L1 to this program. Right now we are testing to see if there is enough interest to make this program work long term. If there is enough interest to make this program possible, we will then take a look at other tests to see if they could work too. L1 is particularly challenging due to the composite vehicle and the fact several states require L1 for their

Yes, the only criteria to participate is you must have earned the certification prior to starting your subscription. If you certifications are expired, you are welcome and actually encouraged to subscribe. After you earn your 8 credits, your certifications will be made current and as long as you continue your subscription, your certifications will remain current. Just to be clear, this program

What happens if you dont answer the question on the day it is sent? In other words, is there a timer as to how long you have access to the questions?

The question will wait patiently for you to activate it and answer. In the earlier model, you could even allow them to stack up if and answer them all later if you wanted to. When you select a question, it even counts down three seconds to give you the chance to click "Whoa, I'm not ready" if you change your mind. I like to wait for a quiet moment, which sometimes doesn't come for a few days

I may reconsider recertifying now (using the new format). I think your offering is probably wise - and is definitely more contemporary than holding fast to what was used since the beginning.

Awesome, I just signed up! I heard that this was coming and I'm happy to participate. My A1-8 cert's expire in December of this year and I'm looking forward to see what I can do to help support this program further.

Thanks for joining the conversation Maurice. One of the important parts of this program is that the candidates must have already earned their credentials. This program is not a substitute for conventional testing. This program is more of a maintenance program for technicians who have already earned their credentials. I can see in the future if technicians in Australia become … certified, they

Thanks Kevin, yes I understood this and I realise it will be at least 5 years and more before our Australian Techs will benefit from this, but if it does progress and you do adopt this process, then yes it would be a huge benefit for our regional and remote areas were techs who are already accredited can maintain their accreditation.

I just recertified the A9 and L2 tests on Monday. Is the A9 test included in this beta program?

The short answer is yes. We are expecting to offer the A9 content sometime in Q3 of this year. The longer answer is we ran a 6 month pilot last year with A1-A8. Overall, the pilot was very successful. We obtained funding and was able to launch the beta program. A9 was not part of the pilot, but we wanted it to part of the beta. We are in the process of developing the A9 items now. All of the

I participated in the pilot program last year. It is a slick app and a great option for people who do not have a testing center close by.
