BMW F Chassis Instrument Cluster (Kombi) Troubles
Within the last week I have seen two cases of BMW F chassis instrument cluster failures which have been different from other failures I had previously seen. Both of these vehicles presented with the infamous “increased battery” discharge message.
Both cars had the same fault code 804086 (Driver 15KLWUP short circuit to positive) and both vehicles were an F30 chassis 3 series.
In both cases voltage drop testing the fuses revealed excessive power consumption which eventually lead to disconnecting the cluster and verifying the vehicle no longer had excessive parasitic load.
Keep an eye out for similar issues when working on BMW F chassis cars with flat batteries! Of course, running an energy diagnosis is also preferable to assist in battery system troubleshooting.
Common F chassis cluster problems I am aware of now include:
Failure during software updating
Intermittent cutting out of the display and pointers
Permanent failure of the display and pointers
