2009 Ram 5.7 Low Oil
hello, all I have this dodge 5.7 Hemi it has low oil pressure warning comes on with an engine hot all the time high speed, and idle. replaced the oil filter and 5w30 oil still the same. conform low oil with a mechanical gauge as well. it goes low 2-3 psi .when start cold it takes few second to build the pressure and i can hear pump whining for few second too. it seems like plugged pick-uptube or a bad pump. any thoughts on it? i have never done one of these. is it common on these engine oil pump to go bad? thank you
Not a common problem in my experience although I remember a case where someone had lifter problems. You already checked pressure and confirmed low! Oil analyzing comes to mind but unfortunately you already changed oil. Chemical analyzing can often reveal if bearings are down. Alternatively drop the pan and make sure the entire pickup is OK! Customer Info is also key here!! if it is a gradual…
Replace the oil pump to I had same issues on a Chrysler 300 5.7 the pickup tube was clogged up and the oil pan I had to send out to be cleaned out I replace timing chain as well with guides big job here’s a picture of the pickup tube what ever you do replace oil pump as well good luck
Dodge has a history of using too small of pick up tube screens. They do clog up. Flushing will do no good. Pull the pan and you will likely find sludge and a choked up screen. Clean the pan and replace the pick up. Excess cold starts and short trip driving are what usually causes this. The engine and the oil never reaches full operating temperatures. If the pan is clean and the screen is clean…
I thought the same about pick up ducking air too ,I over filler about 2.5 litter didn't help. Thank yiu
In cold start it take few seconds to build the pressure. But it goes around 20 25 psi.. when I press gas it drops down momentarily which supposed to go up with acceleration, making think more of blockage in pick up ?
The process of elimination points in the direction of pulling the pan down. It likely has a layer of muck in the bottom. Years ago, I pulled pans down on a regular basis due to this issue. Many of the pans of that time had a depressed area which the pick up tube end sat in. It was perfect for cold oil paraffins to collect and thicken. Very poor design idea. If the pump is questionable, replace…
