2001 Buick Century Custom 3.1L (J LG8) 4-spd (4T65-E)
B2960
No Start
No Crank / No Start

Vehicle came in as no start. No Comm with PCM. Unplugged BCM and regained Comm with PCM and other modules. Pretty simple fix right? Ordered used BCM and installed it. Regained comm with all modules. Went through set up new BCM in verdict scan tool. Wouldn't let me write new Last six of vin. Borrowed TECH 2 and wrote that but still no start/no crank. Went through 3 X 10 minute security relearn but security light would not stay out. Did that at least five times. Went underhood to Starter relay and jumped relay, engine cranks No Start. Plugged old BCM back in and jumped relay again this time it starts for 2 seconds then cuts fuel. New BCM back in jump relay Cranks with no start at all. All scan data in used BCM seems normal. Not sure why it won't relearn the key chip signal.

I had this problem before the only way to make it work you need to do tech 2 remote programming but you need a subscription to gm programming sps service

That vehicle is not 3x10 . In my experience when you replace the bcm the 1x12 won't work I've always have to do a vtd learn thru sps

Cannot be used. MUST be new or reman. Nothing can be rewritten to it. It is locked. They‘re cheap, just get a reman from ACDelco

Hi Bill, There is a way to fix this in an unconventional way. I don't want to get chased with torches and pitchforks right now. Reach out and I can give you some pointers. -Mike

Hi Mike, I'm not sure why you would get chastised for putting up a valuable tip. It seems like this is the only way this is going to get fixed on a almost 20 year old vehicle. I checked and GM # …, AC Delco # …, is discontinued and there are none available. I see value in doing this service and would be interested in what you have to say on this. I'm guessing you're talking…

Yes, I have done it. These are pretty easy. Connect to old chip and read. Connect to used bcm chip and write. Plug and play after that.

Hi Bob, John, and Mike, What tools/equipment would you recommend and what software are you using? I'm guessing you can also remove the chip from the original and install it on the replacement, correct? What do you typically charge for said service? I don't need a dollar amount but, an hour, two?

Hi Scott, Well I attempted to help out Bill but the BCM was not set up as I expected. He sent these pictures to me. My best suggestion was to remove the burned IC from the board and replace from the donor BCM. It would either work out great, do nothing or burn the second chip. We will see what Bill decides to do. With many BCMs there is a small 8 legged chip that can either be exchanged or read…

Hi Mike, Thanks for the reply! If I'm correct the memory chip is the 31P040, right? It looks like someone let the smoke out of that IC. I've seen that before when someone tried to apply power to the starter solenoid on a 2009 Malibu. The no communication that started this was related to a defective BCM. After they let the smoke out of the ECM, that was needed as well…

Scott, Since all the chips are re-labeled on the board, it is hard to tell what is what. I do believe the 31P040 is a driver chip as there is a good sized heatsink underneath it. Kevin suggested that the memory is in the microcontroller. The most likely target is the …

Thanks Mike! I wouldn't have guessed that chip, but I haven't tried this yet.

After looking at the pictures posted I see that the one I did was different. Mine was out of a 2009 Malibu and it had the typical 8 leg eeprom chip. I used the Andromeda eeprom tool.

Scott, I am a novice at this point with EEPROM. I use MiniPro and CarProg so far. One thing about EEPROM is you need multiple tools. I have saved many modules to "practice" on. Michael has given some great advice about hot air station and soldering skills. So much to learn in circuit, out of circuit, masks, etc. I have a couple of gentleman that I reach out to and get advice. I am grateful…

I find EEPROM work fascinating. Especially with the way things are heading, at least seemingly that way. Ive been researching more and more. Actually a website i just came across and then I saw you had mentioned them. also based where i live. theres always the "why, when you can replace it faster" but eventually thats not going to be the case and for the person that CAN afford 2 labour hours vs…

Check the security status in the Tech2. It will show learn status.
