Rough Running
P0011 - 000 - Retard Setpoint Not Reached (Over-Advanced)
P0341 - 000 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Vehicle came in running rough, camshaft fault and miss fire codes. Performed running compression test and found the intake camshaft to be suspect 25 degrees off time. Removed timing covers and found the camshaft timing was off, the tensioner did not fail but it was of an older design. There is a TSB for P0341 in relation to the camshaft bridge and a screen that gets damaged. My camshaft bridge had been damaged to, so we replaced during the repair.

Upon completion and at startup I heard a ratcheting noise and the engine immediately ran rough. Tear it down and inspect the timing, everything was timed properly. Was the tensioner not set properly I thought? Re-timed and tried again. I removed the timing chain 3x before I found the fix. I was using factory timing tools to set the timing.

After going around a bit I found the camshaft solenoid for the VVT had failed. You can see in the picture the protrusion which was causing the camshaft to be out of time. Simple fix in the end but what a day of school it was for me.

TSB # … April 15, 2011. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 15 number 11 – 19 dated February 10, 2011

Point is, not always does the TSB lead you in the correct direction.

Good job Anthony! We had one like this, vw 2.0L TFSI. My hair is getting thin by default, but sleep was deprived and hair maybe got thinner on that one. I now keep That valve on my desk to reminisce about :) We had finally started the engine for a few seconds with that valve completely removed try determining if the oil pressure was getting into the phasers and causing the timing to be off so far. Good job!

Nice work. I had the same thing happen to me, and happen to my friend just the other day. When he showed me a photo of parts that were installed I immediately recognized the problem and it saved him a lot of time and money! He had been calling our shop wanting a camshaft, but I wanted to see why he wanted a new cam.

Unfortunately for me, the car I discovered this on had been "rebuilt" by a kid in high school shop class and there were more things wrong with the engine that the car would have been worth.

Hi Anthony What's really messed up on Vw/Audi is all the information is not in the same place. My thing to do is what else is this motor in?

A different model might have the tsb.
