Is a used Steering rack possible… Sure!
2013 Dodge Ram comes in for no steering (VERY hard to turn) with a C2217-00 Electric power steering module internal fault code. Testing the vehicle we found it requires a new EPS (electric power steering module) which comes complete with a new steering rack and pinion at a Canadian cost of $1800 ish. My luck the dealer has (2) in stock with a ($250) core .. oh my they want these ones back! I think About possibly using a used Rack however none were availably locally. So new it is... I sell the job and install the new EPS/Rack And decide you see what’s causing these things to fail and see if a used steering rack would have been possible . I know on the last 2014 Jeep Cherokee another shop had installed a used rack and it was setting a vin mismatch code and everything I tried with a scan tool to attempt a re-configuration failed. To which i ended up telling the shop to install a new steering rack.
Here is what I found inside the EPS/Rack
Did you see anything obvious that cause it to fail? I can't get the videos to play
Anyone else having issues watching the video’s? There was water inside the EPS which caused the internal fault code.
I can't get them to play in chrome. They only work in IE for me

I had one of those a year or two ago that had broken boots, filled with water, very noisy bearings in the motor, and it would occasionally lock up solid while driving. Noisy and frightening. It got a used one, accepted it with no problem. Ram 1500, but I really don't remember the year.
thanks! Will forward this info so we can drop labor time! Keep it up!!
How would this drop labor times? I am not sure I follow you?
The most common issue with these Module is lack of comm... So replacing the tranceiver MCP2531 would make the miracle as well. You also can copy the eeprom and save it in your BIN files repository for later. sometimes the eeprom get busted (eraised) by battery wrong connections. Good job. Is that a UPA programmer? Please talk to me. ...Achieveing the impossible.... 🤏✅
So what do you do when the eeprom gets erased? Do you have to do the eeprom file read /write or a simple witech calibration flash?
Well... edit it, No you can't Reflash a replacement is another expensive solution. Yes. That's why is a good practice to save the file for later; then you can edit accordingly. Using a blank eeprom.
Kevin, You never cease to amaze! Great write up. I had a used one last week that was already installed on a Chrysler 200. I had to walk away.
Is it not possible to change the vin on one of these newer Chrysler parts? I seen in his information that it had vin 1 and what looked like vin 2
Gerald, I have tried on multiple occasions using Witech to marry a used Electric Power Steering module to a Chrysler. It fails the PROXI learn and will not correct in restore vehicle configuration. There may be a back door or easter egg but I have yet to learn. There are efforts to write an aftermarket application to address this but it is not available yet. The "official" answer to this is to…
Kevin nice write up as usual & thanks for all you share!
Excellent write up Kevin. Thanks for sharing that information and the videos.
Nice case study with the videos and reading the eeproms. How would you transfer the file to another module?
You read the eeprom data, save it to a file and then rewrite the module to be installed
