Ford / Rotunda collecting TAX and have no idea what TAX?

Kevin Technician Winnipeg, Manitoba Posted   Latest   Edited

My IDS subscription just expired, and I went to renew my IDS subscription

Iam in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada

The Rotunda website requires $900 US dollars for the year Subscription + TAX of $108 US Tax

I questioned them about the $108 US dollar tax, I asked Rotunda what tax this is? is this a State TAX or Provincial Tax? They cant answer that question? I asked the Lady on the phone "You want my payment but cant tell me what tax this is"? She then says please send in your tax form? I asked her which tax form? I said to her I have a GST and PST tax number and a Businesses number. She has no idea.. she also has no idea what tax they are collecting for? I explain that If your charging me 7% PST and 5% GST (Our Provincial Tax) it equals 12% which equals $108 dollars BUT not then it should be in Canadian Dollars not USA dollars.

The Lady from Rotunda then says she says I can process the payment, I explained I want to know what tax I am paying? She has NO idea?

She says I should phone Ford Canada Because they don't make the prices they only collect and process the subscriptions. I explained well you should know what Tax I am being charged for.? I also told her that when I call Ford Canada I am sure they will direct me back to Rotunda for this issue.

I then called Ford Canada and talked with a gentleman by the name of "Leavy" who is NOT based in Canada But the USA and says he only deals with the "Canadian customers" and has no idea but directs me back to Rotunda? Just like I said would happen.

Does anyone have a contact phone number with someone that can Answer my questions about the TAX that's being charged? Thanks Kevin … Elec-Tech Auto Winnipeg Manitoba Canada

I just received a email back from Rotunda that explains its my GST form. I still don't know how 5% GST on $900 US dollars is $108 USA dollars?

They tried billing me sales tax at my last renewal, we sent over our resellers tax certificate from our State and they took it off.

Hi Bruce, I think this has nothing to do with collecting sales tax, or having a valid sellers permit. I do programming, but this is a labor item. (at least for me) Labor in California is not taxable. Software could be taxed, but only if it's itemized separately as a "part", which it is not. I personally look at my costs and determine what my labor rate needs to be on this line item. The same…

Hi Kevin, GM/AC Delco was charging tax on software last year for me. This was done in error as California did not charge sales tax for the 0's and 1's if it's not a physical disc. I would imagine this is part of why Amazon, ebay, and a bunch of other companies started to collect sales tax. This is something that would require some research on your part to determine what is taxed in your area…

The courts decided that it's legal for a State to charge sales tax for items purchased out of State. So, I I purchased something on eBay and the person lives in China, I would be charged my State sales tax. Do you really think that the software people that designed the new payment on the site knows that you live out of the country? No. Do you really think the person on the other end of the phone…

It’s hit and miss with me. Some years they charge tax, this year they didn’t. I don’t know what the tax code says about software. We already have the program, we are just updating it.

My problem is the county wanting to charge us property tax on these software subscriptions. So far I have avoided paying tax to the vendor.

Same here. Some Year they charge me tax, other years they don't. And very few times the renewal goes fine online. But most of the time, it gets stuck, and I have to call and spent a lot of time trying to pay the renewal. And they have all the past years licenses numbers, Yet still ask me for the last 4 digits of past licenses. Each December, I have to separate a couple days and fill my patience…

I contacted CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) and they wanted to know what GST number form are they looking for? There is 100's of GST forms? They also wanted to know which TAX they are collecting for? I informed Rotunda I have a GST number. But I still don't know what form they want?

I was not charged tax but after a NJ tax audit last year they said I needed to pay the tax on that. It falls under "Use tax". Didn't fight them on that, just paid it

I hate taxes as much as the next guy, but how much time is worth wasting to save the tax on the software? In my state, sales tax should be around $60 on the software, if my math is right. I'll find out in a few days when I renew. Even is the tax was $108, like the OP, I can't imagine wasting much time, if any, to save that money. I'm way too busy running my business to spend the time calling…

Don't get me wrong Mike, I am the first person that will tell you its a complete waste of time and I normally just pay and move along... as my schedule is also to busy to worry about paying $108 dollars in tax. The point here is for these Companies and other companies to make sure they know what tax they are collecting and what forms they require? On my last email from rotunda they exclaimed…

A better question might be who are they collecting the tax for? If they don't know what tax, what form, or anything else about it, how do they know it needs to be collected and paid to who?

You are being charged GST and PST on your purchase. Ford has to remit the taxes to the Canadian and Manitoba governments, because they are selling a product in Manitoba. Get used to it. It's been the law for several years, but not that many online sellers collect it yet. If you read your laws, you will find that you are supposed to submit the PST on everything you purchase from out of province…
