Opus Drive ES not ready for prime time

Glenn Owner Upland, California Posted   Latest   Edited

Bought the new Opus Drive ES platform a couple of months ago. Got to say, not very impressed. I was really looking forward to upgrading my scan tools. The power of Autologic and Drew technologies were the factors that cemented my buying decision.

Now after a few moths, I'm convinced I made the WRONG decision. First case was a 2011 Ford Focus with codes for an air leak in the intake. Could not retrieve freeze frame data for the code. Called tech support, was told they would escalate problem to engineering for resolution. After a few days, no resolution, customer took vehicle out of shop. Next, 2017 Honda Accord, could not communicate with TPMS Module. Went back to my obsolete S.O red brick and was able to see data. Now, I got a 2004 Camry in for intermittent stalling, plugged in, no data in generic or enhanced, again, my old red brick communicates just fine.

Just wondering if I'm the only one with a defective piece of equipment or is this scan tool just not ready for prime time. For the record, each time I had problems, tech support rep Steve has been very patient with me and has tried to help but, still no resolve to the problems faced with this scan tool.

Be very wary of shelling out the BIG $$$ for this product!

You’re not the only one. Cheaper tools often do more, better. Support? Fantastic. Saturn support may have been great too. Can they program a module for you that they charge you for? Absolutely. After spending that money can you do them for yourself? Not many. This can be said of all scan tools but with the Blue Box as their legacy so far I have it seen that level of ability. There‘s plenty of…

Glenn, you were on the support line with Steve. I was also logged into the tool. The Ford issue that you had was fixed last month. I also had you plug into a new Honda and it worked flawlessly. It is true that we have an issue with serial communication vehicles. We are working on this. This tool communicates on a J2534 interface. The Toyota in question does not. If you used the factory tool…

Chris, I will have to disagree with the 2004 Toyota Camry issue. I routinely use a J2534 interface as well as a Mongoose and communicate with those vehicles just fine with Toyota Techstream. Don't get me wrong the data is slow and almost useless but it communicates. Just what I have observed.

and that is the issue we are having with serial data vehicles. The comms are too slow and the tool says "hey there is no data here". This is the main thing we are working on. Unfortunately, from what the engineers are telling me, this is on a case by case basis and there is no one fix for the issues. They are in the field today, as a matter of fact fixing some serial issues on older GM vehicles…

Chris, ISO/Serial Data issues have plagued many aftermarket tools. When I was involved with gathering information with GIT engineers they openly admitted they had issues with this. I have seen this time and time again. It is a rough protocol. Another rough one is Keyword2000 on GM. But, just to clarify your statement about the user would have the same issue using a J2534 interface and OE…

Um???? Its a 2004 camry...2004!!! Drewtech makes the current factory scan tool for toyota. Toyota is completely j2534 compliant from 96 and up. Been using cardaq M for years on everything from a 2001 to 2018

Well I'm going to disagree. Its constantly being updated and I just diagnosed a 2014 Ford Transit with a BCM issue and I also programed a egs on a 7 series BMW. While I know every tool has its holes to call it a waste of money is flawed. One call to tech support more than pays for the script. How many times has snappy let me down for twice the price. I don't gripe about it mainly because most…

Hi Glenn, I think if you buy the drive pro for a one stop solution it ”could“ leave you disappointed. The beauty of this tool is that it is a window to the oem websites and the tech support. If you view it this way it becomes far more useful. It is the last tool we grab for in house diagnosing and only grab when we have exhausted all of our “quick” fixes. The support is fantastic and…

To be honest with you I unfortunately have to agree that for the price of the tool and the price of tech support combined this tool is way over priced. I had this tool purchased on July 1st 2020 and the only condition I purchased it for it was money back 100% if not satisfied within first 30 days. Sure enough before the end of July I had to return it and ask for my money back, after going thru…

There are definitely some holes in the software, but if you report the errors they get addressed fairly quickly. All aftermarket scan tools have flaws, there is no one tool fits all model in the aftermarket, and as Ford IDS has recently proven, not even the factory tooling goes without issues. The recent software upgrade with to the acquisition of auto enginuity has added a significant…

Update; Spent most of the afternoon speaking with people from Opus. All of this could have been avoided if they would have answered their customer service phones this morning. I do not appreciate the condensing tone in Mr. Martino's original post to me. When a customer gets frustrated and feels no-one is addressing their problems, unfortunately, the internet is the only place for satisfaction…

I'm having the same issues, no comms with cars I communicate fine with other scan tools, wrong code numbers, missing functions the Autologic assyst has. But the ability to call and ask questions to people, have them remote in and help, is well worth the money.

I can understand your frustration, anyone that knows me knows I have almost every scan tool, I've got 3 trucks running mobile diagnostics and programming in a single metro area, and still growing, so we use scan tools on 20-30 cars a day. On the Toyota issue, I have had multiple issues with early 2000's and earlier Toyota's even with Techstream and a Cardaq3, had to pull out my MTS3100 with…

Keith, Never had an issue with Toyota with Techstream and J2534 device even on earlier models. Although, I don’t use Cardaq. I am not a big J2534 guy to those who know me. But, the user had issues with getting data from Engine not HVAC if you look at his original post. I also own a Mastertech MTS3100 and use that once in awhile on earlier models as well. There are certain functions…

Hi Keith, I think your assessment is spot on. I don't have an Autologic but I have many factory tools and an Autel. I usually grab the Autel as a first look and decide if I need get something else to finish my diagnosis. If I was working on a domestic or Japanese vehicle I doubt I would ever go to the Autologic for the scan tool capability for that but I might use their tech support.

Hi all! It is a little been weird for me to purchase Drive ES or Pro to work with Ford Focus or Toyotas. Autologic is a superior tool for deep diagnostics of European brands, like JLR, BMW, Mercedes, PSA, Renault. But it is almost useless for Asian or US brands. ES software, as far as I know, is based on Swedish Autocom. Autocom has very good coverage for brands, present in European market, like…

Definitely not Autocom. We incorporate Auto Enginuity software from right here in the states. I am actually out in the field right now working with product development so we can work a few bugs out. What people need to see is that we have one tool that is running the application of 3. The melding of the platforms has given us a few hurdles for sure . But how many scantools (aftermarket) have you…

Having a Drive Pro and a Assist Plus along with about 10 more OE and aftermarket diagnostic scanners I would purchase Autologic again. I don't think we could properly repair all the makes we do with just one tool.

Glenn, I purchased a drive pro when they were first released, I have since returned it because I felt the same way about the tool. Seemed every time I needed to do something the tool would fail. Hello Glenn, When a tool lets us down it is very frustrating because by extension you feel you have let your customer down too. That said like many have posted below there will never be one tool which will do everything anymore. Technology is advancing rapidly and it is making tools we used to be able to use and update for years obsolete in a much shorter time. What separates many of the tools…

Manuel, I have to disagree a bit. There is room for everyone in our industry. What is a mobile guy going to do when the tools/software/subscriptions cost increase to a point where it becomes a harder and harder to make a good business case? You also have the costs associated with traveling to a client. When we first started BlueLink there were and still are quite a few mobile operations which…

I would also add that a good size geographical portion of the country has no access to mobile diagnostics/programming services, including ours. This is the primary reason for my interest in the Drive Pro, (as a package) along with the support mechanism and especially the remote license capability. I don't ever see it as a profit center for my store, but maybe at least self sustaining, and most…

Manuel.....I quietly thought this too. As I continue to build my mobile arsenal, I now hear shops talking about getting Drive Pro for their programming needs. One tool on a subscription for programming and support. Now, if this catches on and is successful, the mobile industry, that financially supports the purchase of programming tooling will be crushed and all the mobile guys that have TENS OF…

No chance. They have to put a tech on the car and basically do the entire job AND pay for it. At least with a mobile tech they pick up the phone and hand you the keys. They mark up what you charge and you do the work. Keeps their tech making money instead of putting a charger on it and turning the key. Plus they (at least used to, if not still) charge per module. So a Mopar trans that’s wants…

I also do Mobile programming in the Detroit area. I do not in any way feel threatened by what Opus is doing. SO far they have done a mediocre job at best. I have sold many programming devices to shops that own a Drive Pro and/ or a RAP. Because the tech feels he can just do it himself cheaper. Shops that program themselves are also my best customers. Like when Chrysler raises their rates or Ford…

Here‘s how I am seeing it. Most of my shops that I frequent want the job done right. They want that extra ”employee” for a hour. A lot of my shops have no technical knowledge to get into something that advance. Plus the longer those “techs” stay behind a desk the further they’ll fall! I have only a couple of clients that don’t know how to even turn on a scanner. I get a lot that are so backed up…

It is great for the European vehicles, needs work on Asian and Domestic. We keep sending them feed back with issues all the time to help improve it. I have come to the conclusion there will always be unexplainable, highly inconvenient gaps in coverage on any/ all scan tools. It has been so since the very early days. And since you mentioned price, would you care to say what it cost? If not I fully understand. It would help to frame the context a bit for those less familiar with the system. Respectfully. Chris A.
