Hey Everyone,

Today I had a water leak issue and being new to this type of analysis I'm interested in learning some best practices from my colleagues here. Any advise is appreciated.

Thank you

I've sat in the car with panels removed in the area I suspect water leakage at and had another guy run a water hose over the windshield/sunroof. I've also taken vehicles through a car wash to duplicate the leak. They never seem to come in when its raining to get the leak checked out!

I've never used either, but I don't see this problem that often either.

Use spray talc/foot powder where you suspect the leak - it turns dark when it gets wet.

Add the accessory kit with ultrasonic generator to the linked product. That is one technique. Another is fresh air vent open, blower on high to closed cabin. Use smoke machine with diffuser tip in a calm environment outside looking for smoke blown away from body. products.inficon.com/en-us/nav-prod…

Hi Jim: I've seen the higher pressure smoke used successfully with leaks before. I'm having a bit of difficulty getting my mind wrapped around the ultrasonic detector's laser function. I can see the efficacy of it when using smoke but the manual doesn't mention smoke. Then again, all the manual says is to push the button to turn the laser on and off. Any input on how the laser would help

Guido, old friend. I've known you so long I'm not sure when your serious and when you're busting my chops..... The whisper with the laser simply helps point to the origin of the sound. The tool can detect the roar of a leak from some distance under some conditions. The whisper has no intersection with the smoke machine technique, unless one was using them simultaneously. HTH

Hi Jim: I was being serious. I understand the ultrasonic part of it. I just am not getting the laser aspect of it. As I said, I can see a laser helping if smoke is being used. You have to admit that if someone tells you to find a sound using a light, they may be a candidate for drug testing. (And then go check your stash.) I've turned the a/c to recirc , the blower on high shut all the doors and used my smoke machine to run ssmoke by all the seals or anywhere that would leak

I I have very good success using my ultrasonic listening tool, while having an ultrasound generator inside the car.

A big part of being effective is understand and careful analysis of how water can travel, including uphill. The most difficult one I ever dealt with had water entry without a real leak. The water entered past the sunroof gasket (which generally does not seal, just restricts), began flowing through the correct channel, but then wicked between the metal of two layers of the roof (a pinch weld)…

I thought I'd throw this one in since it hasn't come up yet. Shut the vehicle up tight and turn the heater to MAX. Let it run long enough to heat up the interior. Then use a thermal imager to look for the temperature variation around the area where the leak seems to be occurring. I've also done this by setting the A/C on MAX and cooling the interior down but it is harder to spot. I've also had

FIRST AND FOREMOST DUPLICATE THE LEAK PRIOR TO MAKING ANY REPAIR ATTEMPTS If you encounter a lot of water leaks, it may help to build a "water tree". At one point we had one, just a few pieces of pipe with a female hose connection on the bottom and a shower head at the top, Park the car turn on the hose and check back after a cup of coffee. There are some key things to remember. How was the
