International VGT Diagnosis with DSO?
I was wondering if anyone here has scoped current of the VGT actuator and has a known good to share. I plan to test power/ground/CAN bus on this truck tomorrow, but want a better way to see actuator vs turbo issues. I have attached a diag document with wiring diagram if that helps. TIA.
I don't have the info your are asking for, but what is the truck's issue?
Intermittent VGT actuator codes. I didn't take the rod off yet, but it always moves during KOEO test for me, guessing it is the actuator. I plan to pull the rod tomorrow and feel how smooth the VGT operation is.
We had one about the same vintage that had no power when driving and the actuator would only move on initial KOEO. Didn't have a chance to scope it, but assumed that it was programed to do that with the CAN wakeup message. You could move the rod pretty easily. Replaced the actuator and was fixed. After replacement, it would fight you trying to move the rod. Hope this helps.
I have scoped a lot of Cummins. Looks like it operates the same way as Cummins does. What brand of Turbo is it? Can you show some pics?
I will grab some when I am there tomorrow. Pretty sure it is a Garrett.
Snap me a pic of the turbo so I know what we are working with and I’ll give you some insight of what I have seen fail on them and look at how we can check.

The Key On cycle for the VGTA should be 5 full sweeps. If you have access to IKnow articles; there is a related article IK… Maxxforce DT 9/10 Turbocharger Diagnostics and Replacement Information. Sorry for the late reply guys. I never had a chance to scope this one... spent 5 hours of diag on body and chassis electrical issues and ran out of time. Pulled the rod off turbo and it was smooth. Turbo looked newer, actuator was old. We are starting with an actuator. I have to go back to program a new BCM and replace around 20 terminals this week, will try and current ramp it then. I am just…
You are going to have to probably get some known goods to help prove this out Matt. I figured Cummins Vgts out by doing this. Just make sure you test it cold then hot on a key cycle and then once it's hot do the actuation test. Im working on some case studies to post on here soon on Cummins Vgt I'll give you a shout when I have them posted.
