Radio In Theft Lock

Vehicle is from another shop, I was called in to relearn the VIN in the radio module that was replaced from another vehicle, verified that the number inside of radio does not match The vehicle.

I wanted to verify that first of all a VIN reset is possible on this vehicle and second if I need the programming subscription or the tech 2 emulator for doing the vin reset as both of my Autels and my snap on do not have the option to clear the VIN.

thanks in advance.

yes aftermarket wont let you clear the vin in my experience. Even with GM tools sometimes it is a fight. I have not done this particular vehicle but typically on tech2 it doesn't take but a few minutes to run through.

First off. If you are doing mobile work and want to be a mobile tech you would usually get the VIN and look up the service the shop is requesting. Prepare yourself prior. Do your research. This particular vehicle I believe is a global A vehicle. Been a while since I worked on one that old. If it is you will more than likely will not be able to rewrite the VIN. I know I have gotten lucky on a…

A 2012 Equinox is a Global Architecture A Vehicle, Tech 2 will not work. It requires GDS2. GM does not recommend using used modules in a AA vehicle. I know a radio rebuilder that has had no issues, but GM has a TSB regarding the potential of corrupting the VIN in multiple module on a AA vehicle if you introduce a different VIN to the network. Just an FYI.

I have all the GM scanners including the GDS2 , your current vehicle is a Global A, I have been asked many times to due this same procedure"Program used radio into new vehicle" but it is not an option and never been able to rewrite the Vin number with the factory equipment. Weird thing is you can reprogram the software but cannot change the Vin , just for the testing you will need GM programming…

Kabel, do you have this chart? (below PDF): Pretty much anything that falls under GDS2 as correct the scan tool, makes used modules a no-go.

BK, What people can "get away with", is nice to know if you are made of money, and can eat the cost when it doesn't work, however out here, where everyone is poor, it is better to follow OE recommendations; gm-techlink.com/?p=11221 Kabel was dealing with a personal friend, so rolling the dice was an option. Rolling the dice is not a professional way to run a business.

Hi Geoff, "Rolling the dice is not a professional way to run a business." It might not be professional, but how many do exactly that, and seemingly do well enough to have it be the way to operate. Sometimes I feel like salmon in a river of trout. Sure there are other salmon swimming upstream with me, but we're getting overrun by the trout going with the flow. I'm trying to avoid going over the…

It's actually nice to hear the industry weeded somebody out. Here, people work for a shop for a while, screw stuff up, get fired, then tell all their friends and family (1000 people, it's Maui bro) that the shop was lame, and now they fix cars at home, for way more money than any shop could possible pay them. And they do that on top of whatever full time job they got at a major hotel. Then…

That's weird that everyone says is not possible, ive done up to 2018 used radios on gm just regular sps programming with j2534. It worked everytime so far. I know there a TSB about used modules on 2018 and up and I've always tell the customer before trying but a couple of weeks back I did used cluster and it worked. So far the only used global module I haven't been able to get to work is ECM

Hi Ricardo, I believe I'm giving credit to the right person - Jaime Lazarus. I believe he stated that programming is like walking through a mine field. Sometimes you get through unscathed, other times... I personally have seen non-functioning BCM's after trying to install used parts on GM Global A vehicles and other 'features' that are undesirable. There are methods that others have shown on…

I have not been able to do this and I have attempted to reprogram several that were locked due from having a used radio installed. Some mentioned below they have had success. My guess would be there is probably some model gm vehicles out there that may not theft lock the radio and those are the ones that could maybe be changed with success. The ones I have seen will be locked similar to a honda…

This car is a Global A as stated. As far as wether or not the VIN when change when you program it can only be determined after its programmed. Period. If you program it and it changes, it worked. If you program it ans it does not change then it needs a new OE radio. Also you would not use GDS2 too program this radio. You would use GM SPS.

For reference only I have installed used radios over 20 times and never had an issue if the memory was professional cleared by a legitimate service. But I always tell the customer do not install the unit have it cleared 1st. We also have convinced the customer to have their original units repaired over 30 times and explained the benefits of this over used units and the complications they bring …

Thanks everyone. I guess I should’ve been a little more clear, this is The owner of another shop’s personal vehicle and he already purchased and installed the radio and then ran into the problem, I warned him about all of the possibilities and he gave the go ahead to try to program it with GM SPS. This time it was successful with no other issues that I was able to find, So it was a success all…
