Hi

Honda crv 2012 brought by customer complaining power steering locked while driving and show steering sign on the dashboard. Car scanned no code. Everything checked seems normal I am driving this car from last 2 days. Can anyone know or help me how to figure out why is this car steering getting locked?

When this happened did the customer recall any other information. Did dash board lights look like vehicle was just started (bulb check)? I have a contact at Honda dealer that had loose battery connections casing park condition while driving. Tell tale sign is bulb check as if just started.

Hi Brian. I checked battery connections and talked to the customer he said it happens once or twice a month. Last time when it happened customer was coming out of freeway,no other lights were showing up on the dash except steering light.

If this vehicle has eps ( an electric motor on the steering column ) I have known them over heat when maneuvering the vehicle in a tight spot or holding the steering on full lock for to long . Conect scan tool and look for motor temp pip and monitor whilst exercising the steering. Get more info from the customer as to when the fault occurred. A quick google search will show these vehicles have a…

Not a clue about Honda but the Nissan's actually have the information about overheating the electric motor in tight parking lot maneuvers in the owners manual. Says it is a normal condition For what it is worth

Yeah i contacted the dealer and they said it is a common problem. But they were not sure about which part is causing this problem. They said change the whole rack and pinion.Talked to the customer and he said it happened early in the morning while the car was parked on the driveway and the temperature was low that day.

This vehicle has electric power steering assist. In your video it looks like it loses assist, not that the steering actually locks. Connect your scan tool and watch the data stream while making the fault happen. At least it is a repeatable issue so you should be able to find the problem.

Check the battery condition, connections and the alternator output and diode check. Also make sure to check for voltage drop on the main power and ground cables to electric power steering motor from the battery

Amandeep I would pass this one to the dealer in other words I would not touch it with a barge pole ! I have a tale to share if you are sitting comfortably. A young lady with a nearly new small car made in Germany is over taking a large wagon on a U.K. motor way ( a 3 lane highway with a central barrier sepperating it from the opposite carriage way ) the eps has a fit and takes over from the…

I'd look at the steering angle data for loss of signal. Is there communication with the power steering module when it occurs? If it has a separate module... If it loses comm, then maybe the code clears at the same time?

Just a thought here. Have you gone into service information and looked up symptom based issue. Being you have no assist and the light is on with no codes for the EPS Honda has a flow chart.
